S5 Ep164: Conversations With Oscar: The Power of the Dog
23/03/2022 Duration: 49minWhile we over here at We Have Thoughts love us some gay cowboys, this particular western left us wanting something more. The Power of the Dog is a fine movie, and it's just that fine. Fine performances, fine cinematography, fine direction, fine script, fine. Maybe we're the crazy ones for wanting the movie with the most nominations to be a tad better than fine. What did you think of The Power of the Dog? S5 Ep163: Conversations With Oscar: Nightmare Alley
18/03/2022 Duration: 31minGuillermo del Torro tells stories about the horrors of man and the setting for his noir film lends itself perfectly. Nightmare Alley is rich with texture and vibrant with color, beautiful people and beautiful costumes. While we had some issues with some things overall it was a good watch. S5 Ep162: Conversations With Oscar: Licorice Pizza
16/03/2022 Duration: 39minIn this, the year of our lord 2021, Paul Thomas Anderson thought it was appropriate to release a film featuring an illegal age gap romance, and blatant racism. We're still trying to make it make sense. Unfortunately, these overshadow anything we actually liked in this film. PTA, you have some explaining to do. Tell us what you thought of Licorice Pizza. S5 Ep161: Conversations With Oscar: King Richard
11/03/2022 Duration: 45minThis conversation was surprising to all of us in one way or another. We did not have the same experience watching this film and that is why we love talking about these nominations the most! This sport movie or bio pic focusing on the father of tennis super stars Venus and Serena Williams sat differently for each of us. It is a film that brings out our own personal histories and made the conversation (both recorded and not) interesting. Tell us what you thought of King Richard and Will Smith's performance? Tell us about your love for Aunjanue Ellis! Talk to us on Twitter and Instagram! Be Alive - Beyonce *Please excuse the annoying paper rustling Ana provided toward the end of the episode. S5 Ep160: Conversations With Oscar: Drive My Car
09/03/2022 Duration: 42minDrive My Car is the only international/foreign language film to be nominated for Best Picture this year and for a good reason. Hamaguchi's three-hour long film is a steady and consistently paced story about grief and trauma and the toll it can take. We love when a filmmaker lets the setting, and the actors do the work with simple wide shots and intimate close ups. Watch this and tell us what you think! S5 Ep158: Conversations With Oscar: Don't Look Up
04/03/2022 Duration: 01h01minIt's another Adam McKay movie, it shouldn't be that hard to predict how we're going to feel about it but go ahead and listen anyway! This ensemble is STACKED, but did it really add anything to an already messy story? Also, end of the world movies gives Ana panic attacks, so this really had a hard hill to climb. Let us know what you think about McKay's "final" political film and follow us on Twitter and Instagram! S5 Ep159: Conversations With Oscar: Dune
04/03/2022 Duration: 56minDune. dUNE. Duuuuuuuuuuuuuuuune. Trying to reign in our love and adoration for this film was quite the task. It's an artistically told epic told so delicately by snubbed director Denis Villeneuve with an all-star cast. We're already counting down to Part 2. We'll hear no slander about this masterpiece, so tell us all your favorite parts only! S5 Ep157: Conversations With Oscar: Coda
25/02/2022 Duration: 40minCoda is one of the quieter Best Picture nominees, but that didn't stop us from loving it. There is something so special about a film that treats its story so delicately, keeping it from falling into the usual traps of an indie coming of age movie. This ensemble piece soars with a nominated Adapted Screenplay from the film's director Sian Heder. We can't stop saying nice things about Coda, so now it's your turn to tell what you think! S5 Ep156: Conversations with Oscar: Belfast
18/02/2022 Duration: 51minBelfast has been in the conversation for Best Picture longer than most of the other nominees. Going in, we had some high expectations, and we were met with a pretty mediocre film. Kenneth Branagh's semi-autobiographical film about growing up in Northern Ireland during The Troubles never quite hits the right notes, leaving us questioning why this is the front runner. It is a film filled with fine performances, but it only scratches the surface of what it could have been. What do you think of our first Best Picture nominee? We're excited to see how this one falls in all of our rankings by the end of the season! Talk to us on Twitter and Instagram! S4 Ep155: Oscar Rewind: 12 Years A Slave
10/01/2022 Duration: 51minWe did it again! We've watched nine wonderful films from the 2013-2014 season. The movie that took the cake, 12 Years A Slave, is up for review by The Roomies this week and believe it or not, We Have Thoughts... (I'm sorry. I couldn't resist.) It's no secret that we don't love watching films that depict people in pain. Especially people of color. It feels easy, and awards bait-y. The novelty of this film is the beginning, where we find our hero a free man, only to be kidnapped into slavery. Steve McQueen at the helm of this film made us feel like we were in safe hands. He provided a beautiful film that is rich in color and texture, as well as told boldly by its lead cast. Tell us what you think of this Best Picture winner! What did you think of the season? We want to know! S4 Ep154: Oscar Rewind: The Wolf Of Wall Street
03/01/2022 Duration: 31minIf there were one word to describe this movie, I think it would be debauchery. From the get-go, Martin Scorsesse lets us know this story is not for the faint of heart. It is an unapologetic look at what was possible in the 80's. Every scene was eye roll worthy, but because of the incredibly tight, rhythmic script, and the outrageous performances from Leonardo DiCaprio, Jonah Hill and the rest of the cast it felt believable and grounded. What did you think? Was this too much? S4 Ep153: Oscar Rewind: Philomena
27/12/2021 Duration: 25minWe bow down at the altar of Dame Judi Dench. Philomena is heartbreaking true story of more cover ups done by the Catholic Church. However, if put in anyone else's hands beside Dame Judi Dench, this film would have felt ordinary. Her performance of a woman who never loses her faith in the face of horrendous injustice was phenomenal. S4 Ep152: Oscar Rewind: Nebraska
20/12/2021 Duration: 28minNebraska is a simple story. It is one we've seen before, and we'll see again. This reminds me of Paul and Prue on The Great British Bake Off telling the bakers that if you're going to do a simple classic, you have to knock it out of the park; there is no room for errors. Was making this simple story in Black and White enough to set it apart? Whatever we decided, we all agreed June Squibb is a goddamn delight.

S4 Ep151: Oscar Rewind: Her
13/12/2021 Duration: 31min*Sorry the sounds cuts out there for a little bit* Spike Jonze's created a luscious world grounded in a reverent reality. Her is a unique take on relationships and vulnerability and is a wonderful futuristic twist on 'You've Got Mail'. S4 Ep150: Oscar Rewind: Gravity
06/12/2021 Duration: 44minIf you didn't get to see Gravity in theaters, I am truly sorry. The experience was exhilarating. It was a grip the seat handles, edge of your seat kind of movie. At home, on your couch, it maintained almost the same level of anxiety. A simple story of survival surrounded by brilliant film making. Who you go to space? S4 Ep149: Oscar Rewind: Dallas Buyers Club
29/11/2021 Duration: 46min*Sorry the episode just cuts off. We don't know what happened* At the end of each episode, we each make a current ranking of the films so far. This may only be the third movie of the season, but it quickly earned its place at the bottom of our lists where it made itself comfortable enough to stay. There are many problematic things to say about Dallas Buyers Club and we certainly aren't the first to say them. An Oscar was the bowtie on Matthew McConaughey's "McConaissance" but he may not be the actor who deserved the win. S4 Ep148: Oscar Rewind: Captain Phillips
22/11/2021 Duration: 38minCaptain Phillips, or adult Home Alone, is an edge of your seat tense movie that is grounded by its performances by Tom Hanks and Barkhad Abdi as well as the excellent pacing set by the film editors. It may have become of a meme, but we all felt it down in our bones when Abdi said "I am the Captain now." Tom Hanks' performances at the end of the film is some of his best work. S4 Ep147: Oscar Rewind: American Hustle
15/11/2021 Duration: 42minWe're back for another Conversations with Oscar Rewind Series! The year is 2014. We're fearful of the spread of a deadly virus, police brutality has led to protests, Midterm Elections are looming...something feels very familiar here. In comes the Best Picture nominees to distract us! Starting with American Hustle and Amy Adams' boob tape! This star studded cast were led by David O'Russell, an Actor's director, but with an unfortunate script. The costumes and some bright performances weren't enough to get his film to top of any of our lists. What did you think of the film? Was your America hustled? Ted Lasso and the Crown won big, but it was Limited Series Categories we were all watching! S4 Ep145: Oscar Rewind: Birdman
20/09/2021 Duration: 58minThe drum heavy score in this film set the pace for a whirlwind 2 hour film. The technical side of the movie was rightly awarded; the camera work was phenomenal. The film was anchored by a fantastic Oscar Nominated worthy performance by Michael Keaton. #Oscars #BestPicture #OscarRewind #Oscars2015 #BestDirector #BestOriginalScreenplay #BestCinematography #BestActor #BestSupportingActor #BestSupportingActress #BestSoundMixing #BestSoundEditing
