Guillermo del Torro tells stories about the horrors of man and the setting for his noir film lends itself perfectly. Nightmare Alley is rich with texture and vibrant with color, beautiful people and beautiful costumes. While we had some issues with some things overall it was a good watch. Drive My Car is the only international/foreign language film to be nominated for Best Picture this year and for a good reason. Hamaguchi's three-hour long film is a steady and consistently paced story about grief and trauma and the toll it can take. Belfast has been in the conversation for Best Picture longer than most of the other nominees. Going in, we had some high expectations, and we were met with a pretty mediocre film. We did it again! We've watched nine wonderful films from the 2013-2014 season. The movie that took the cake, 12 Years A Slave, is up for review by The Roomies this week and believe it or not, We Have Thoughts... (I'm sorry. I couldn't resist.) It's no secret that we don't love watching films that depict people in pain. Especially people of color. It feels easy, and awards bait-y. The novelty of this film is the beginning, where we find our hero a free man, only to be kidnapped into slavery. Steve McQueen at the helm of this film made us feel like we were in safe hands. If there were one word to describe this movie, I think it would be debauchery. From the get-go, Martin Scorsesse lets us know this story is not for the faint of heart. It is an unapologetic look at what was possible in the 80's. Every scene was eye roll worthy, but because of the incredibly tight, rhythmic script, and the outrageous performances from Leonardo DiCaprio, Jonah Hill and the rest of the cast it felt believable and grounded. We bow down at the altar of Dame Judi Dench. Philomena is heartbreaking true story of more cover ups done by the Catholic Church. However, if put in anyone else's hands beside Dame Judi Dench, this film would have felt ordinary. Her performance of a woman who never loses her faith in the face of horrendous injustice was phenomenal. Nebraska is a simple story. It is one we've seen before, and we'll see again. This reminds me of Paul and Prue on The Great British Bake Off telling the bakers that if you're going to do a simple classic, you have to knock it out of the park; there is no room for errors. Was making this simple story in Black and White enough to set it apart? Whatever we decided, we all agreed June Squibb is a goddamn delight.

Captain Phillips, or adult Home Alone, is an edge of your seat tense movie that is grounded by its performances by Tom Hanks and Barkhad Abdi as well as the excellent pacing set by the film editors. It may have become of a meme, but we all felt it down in our bones when Abdi said "I am the Captain now." Tom Hanks' performances at the end of the film is some of his best work.
