S6 Ep183: Conversations with Oscar: Triangle of Sadness
06/03/2023 Duration: 45minTriangle of Sadness is our new group name. Hi, it's nice to meet you. That may be the only positive we got out of this film, other than Dolly de Leon claiming the new "I am the captain now." We understand where Östlund was trying to say and do, but it didn't necessarily feel original, more just recycled "eat the rich" content. Listen to us talk about how this film stacks up against its competition as we're nearing the end of this Oscar journey. Tell us what you think! Come talk to us on Twitter or Instagram! Tom Cruise reprises his role as the stubborn Captain Pete 'Maverick' Mitchell and he brought along all of the 80's cheese with him. This movie was action packed, and helped revitalized the movie going experience. Listen to us talk about its chances to take home the big prize and how good Tom Cruise's ass looked in the original Top Gun. Tell us what you think! Come talk to us on Twitter or Instagram! 27/02/2023 Duration: 56minTodd Field. Cate Blanchett. A match made in heaven. Tár tells the story of a woman at the top of her field with no where to go but into the stratosphere. Instead we see this deeply controlled, cultivated character depiction of a woman unravelling. Cate Blanchett is at her best here, and we couldn't get enough. Tell us what you think! S6 Ep181: Conversations with Oscar: The Fabelmans
23/02/2023 Duration: 52minAh, Steven Spielberg. We meet again. He is responsible for some of the most iconic films in cinema history. In The Fabelmans, he sets out to tell us his story. Immediately we have Belfast flashbacks and we are hesitant walking in, but Spielberg is Spielberg. He is in a league of his own, creating a whimsical dreamy portrait of an ordinary family that gave us a visionary. Tell us what you think! Come talk to us on Twitter or Instagram! 16/02/2023 Duration: 01h03minWe've been waiting to talk about this one since April and we're shocked we made it through this with minimal crying. This movie literally has everything. 13/02/2023 Duration: 49minBaz Luhrmann has returned, and he is at his most Baz Luhrmann. This montage of a movie featuring moments from Elvis' life whirls past you at a neck breaking speed that also feels like you are dragging your feet through mud. It's a mixed bag of thoughts on our end. Was Austin Butler as good as they say he was? Was this Tom Hanks performance worth him contracting COVID in its early days? S6 Ep178: Conversations with Oscar: Avatar: The Way of Water
09/02/2023 Duration: 54minIt's been 84 years since the first Avatar came out and talking about the sequel was so boring we turned half of this conversation into a therapy session. An unexpected theme this year is spectacle over substance and it was demonstrated so wonderfully here by James Cameron. Is he a visionary? Yes. Is he is a great story teller? Not so much. S5 Ep175: Oscar Rewind: Zero Dark Thirty
02/11/2022 Duration: 33minHave you asked "How soon is too soon?" about a piece of media released not too long after a historic/public event? We asked that back in 2012, and again here in 2022 about Zero Dark Thirty. Yes we now know that this movie was already being made when the events of May 1, 2011 occurred, but that doesn't change our question. While war movies aren't generally our thing, we did appreciate the Kyle Chandler double feature this season. This movie also changed the trajectory of Jessica Chastain's career, so we can't be too mad. Was it too soon for you? What did you think? Let us know over on Twitter and Instagram! S5 Ep174: Oscar Rewind: Argo
03/10/2022 Duration: 44minAnd the Oscar goes to...ARGO. We finally made it to the end of the Oscar season and it really comes full circle for us here at We Have Thoughts. This movie may not be the best Best Picture winner, but it will also be a special one to the three of us. This Oscar season marked a decade of attempting to watch all the BP nominees for Ana and Crystal, and it was Crystal's very strong Ben Affleck opinion's that made us stop and think, "Hey, we should record these movie musings" that got us here today. Enjoy this final episode* of the season! We'll be back with the current Oscar season in the new year. Stay tuned for more thoughts! Follow us on Twitter and Instagram and tell us your rankings! S5 Ep173: Oscar Rewind: Silver Linings Playbook
28/09/2022 Duration: 58minWe're nearing the end of our look back at the 2013 Oscar Season. Crystal and Ana get to reminisce about their early screening experience, Joy gets to talk about her love for this film all while we acknowledge the grossness that IS David O. Russell. Go back and listen to our thoughts on American Hustle for a fuller understanding of what we think. The only reason this film isn't as messy is because there is a base material, a novel, from which Russell had to work with to frame this movie. We encourage everyone to not go see his latest film, Amsterdam. We hear it is actually pretty bad anyways, so no loss there. Let us know over on Twitter and Instagram what your thoughts are! S5 Ep172: Oscar Rewind: Lincoln
19/09/2022 Duration: 01h04minThe combination of one of the greatest directors and one of the greatest actors almost made Lincoln worth the it's lengthy run time. Daniel Day-Lewis IS Abe Lincoln and there is no doubt that this story is an important one, but we were missing the tension and struggling to stay awake. A cast this stacked couldn't keep us interested. What did y'all think of Lincoln? Did you watch it in your history class? Let us know! S5 Ep171: Oscar Rewind: Life of Pi
12/09/2022 Duration: 51minAng Lee's visual epic took home four Oscar Statues in 2013, including one for Best Director. The story of Pi's harrowing journey at sea was brilliantly translated from page to screen giving us some of the most beautiful visual effects and Irrfan Khan stoic performance kept what could be a laughable story of a young man lost at sea with a Bengal tiger beautifully grounded. We also couldn't help but notice Suraj Sharma's name missing from the Best Actor category. What did you think about Life of Pi? S5 Ep170: Oscar Rewind: Les Misérables
05/09/2022 Duration: 57minLes Misérables is an epic, sweeping musical. It was one of the longest running shows on Broadway, a beloved community theatre production, and if you’ve ever seen the inside of an audition room, you’ve probably heard a gaggle of girls butchering On My Own or I Dreamed a Dream. It is a sung-through operatic style musical, so for this movie to have been a success all Tom Hooper needed was a cast that could sing. Instead, we got awkward close up of actors who can kind of hold a tune. The casting of this movie, save for Samantha Barks, Aaron Tveit and Anne Hathaway, was probably the most egregious error made, and all others that followed were made worse by Hugh Jackman screaming the score at us. What did you think of Les Misérables? Let us know on Twitter and Instagram! Watch the 25th anniversary concert! S5 Ep169: Oscar Rewind: Django Unchained
29/08/2022 Duration: 50minThis isn’t the first time we’ve talked about Quentin Tarantino on this podcast and unfortunately it won’t be the last. Django reunites Christoph Waltz with Tarantino and with the Supporting Actor win. One thing we can’t deny about this film is that this cast is stacked. Everyone is giving a great performance, except for Tarantino himself at the end. The accent he chose still haunts us to this day. Visually we enjoyed this movie, but we’re not fans of listening to derogatory speech or seeing hate crimes being committed on the black community, historically accurate or not. What did you think of Django Unchained? Let us know over on Twitter or Instagram! S5 Ep168: Oscar Rewind: Beasts of the Southern Wild
22/08/2022 Duration: 44minBeasts of the Southern Wild is a breathtaking film. Quvenzhane Wallis takes us on a journey that not many adult actors could do well. She carries herself simultaneously as the small child she is and the young woman she learning to be. We all just want to feel cohesive. Dwight Henry, the actor who played Hush Puppy’s father was another stand out. Listen to us rave about his performance and how we wish his name was amongst those in the supporting actor category. S5 Ep165: Conversations with Oscar: West Side Story
25/03/2022 Duration: 01h10minThe original 1961 West Side Story is a beloved classic. So why remake an already great movie? We all asked the same question, but some up and coming director named Steven Spielberg said he could do it and boy did he deliver.
