A segment of the population is responding to the politics of fear and hate, and facts don't matter when they don't align with a world view that paints immigrants, Muslims, African Americans, and other marginalized communities as a threat. As more people become emboldened to come out of the shadows to spread backward ideas, more in step with Nazi Germany or the antebellum south, it's more important than ever for people of conscience to hold themselves accountable for making America Great for all of us. A free press not only informs the public, it acts as a check on government, providing transparency to the people and holding our elected officials accountable. A free press supports free artistic expression (movies, music, etc) which also (can) contribute to the public good. In the first segment we talk with Daniel Kay Hertz about his book "The Battle of Lincoln Park: Urban Renewal and Gentrification in Chicago", which looks at the history of an iconic Chicago neighborhood. We talk about its buildup during Urban Renewal (where large swathes of land were taken by municipalities (around the country) under imminent domain) and how this community became a prime destination for new renters, and the politics that cost many of them their homes.
