Gay When enormous stars detonate as supernovae they release a burst of neutrinos that can be the first sign of a coming explosion. Now, astronomers have built a network to watch for that flash of neutrinos, and help direct their telescopes for when the sky show begins. Supernovae explosions occur in stages, with neutrinos being emitted hours before photons. If we can accurately detect those neutrinos, we might just be able to get on target before the light show even starts....     I’m Rob Webb, your Last Minute Astronomer, bringing astronomy to normies and nerds, with little time to spare.   April of 2025 brings us the annual Lyrid meteor shower, all the naked-eye planets, and plenty of lunar close encounters. We’ll start by talking about this month’s big events, then highlight the naked eye planets, and finish up with the lunar phases, so you can plan ahead better than me.     April 22nd – LYRID METEOR SHOWER – Around 10-20 meteors per hour, the Lyrids are a minor shower, but a meteor shower indeed.  And this year, the Moon will rise very early in the morning, meaning we have clear skies until that point, and even then, it’s not so bright. The shower is greatest on the 22nd, but you might see some on the 21st and 23rd as well.  Just remember each meteor is a piece of debris left over from a comet, and we’re crashing into it at over 100,000 miles per hour, which crushes the atmosphere it hits, heating it up and causing the bright flash.  There is no real best time to see these this yea

    Ron Rosano flew into space on a suborbital flight with Virgin Galactic on October 6, 2023, and has pursued a passion of space travel and astronomy outreach with schools in with the public since 1995.   In awe of the starry sky since he was a child and inspired by the Apollo Moon landings, Ron has closely followed NASA and other space missions for as long as he can remember. He has parlayed this passion into extensive astronomy education outreach as an informal educator for more than 25 years, meeting with more than 220 schools in 15 countries. Greg's new 120 foot diameter space rock, named 2017 BV93, spends most of its time between Earth and Venus as it orbits the Sun once every 346 days. - Recently, my Catalina Team Captain Eric Christensen discovered a potentially hazardous 3,000 foot diameter asteroid, 2017 CH1.     Telescopes are, in a way, time-travel machines to the distant past & faraway galaxies. The speed of light is the Universe’s speed limit. Forget that 55 MPH thing. 186,000 miles per second is more like it! Lightspeed is also the speed of gravity and electricity, so there’s that.   For example, it takes light from the Sun over 8 minutes to reach Earth, so the sunlight we feel on our faces is, on average, actually 8 minutes 25 seconds old. The fastest spacecraft ever launched into an interstellar trajectory right now is Voyager 1.     Hosted by Steve Nerlich. A. Interstellar Travel. There is so much imagined interstellar flitting about in star trek, wars etc, that it seems almost inevitable it will all really happen one day. That is, that we might set off from Earth in the morning and arrive at Alpha Centauri system in time for tea. It’s only 4.3 light years away after all. B. Space Colony. A standard theme of science fiction and science forecasting is that we’ll establish space colonies one day. This is certainly possible, if not likely, but there are a number of issues to think through. Most importantly, you need energy – so if you are going to build a real space colony that’s in space then the Earth – Moon Lagrange points 4 and 5 might be good since they keep pace with the Moon around its Earth orbit and so will get Earth-Moon levels of solar flux. Or you might float a gondola above the clouds of Venus and get even more solar flux – or you might do the traditional thing and build on the surface of a celestial body. The Moon is good for

It travels on a hyperbolic path around the Sun which is highly inclined to the plane where the planets and most of the asteroids travel. Jess's comet's path takes it from deep space into the inner solar system slightly further from the Sun than the planet Mars. Although it will not get closer to the Earth than about 75 million miles it may out gas enough material to make it visible to the naked eye. - If Lunar and Martian colonists are to have chips and salsa they will need grow their own tomatoes. To test methods to do this German Aerospace Center or DLR has developed the EU:CROPIS satellite which will be launched by a Space-X Falcon 9 rocket into low Earth orbit sometime in 2017.
