Next, we meet Christine DeJesus, an organic grower and activist from Cleveland, Ohio. After realizing that teaching college part-time was not going to put food on the table, she began serving and bartending at Great Lakes Brewing Company. www.greatlakesbrewing.com It was here that owner Pat Conway gave her the opportunity to try her hand at farming to support the brewpub. Conway enrolled Christine in a class offered by the local National Park called “Exploring the Small Farm Dream.” She perfected her skills of regenerative farming using spent grain from the brewery as a soil amendment, and incorporating techniques such as companion planting, full crop rotation, beneficial insect management, and building soil with compost and teas.
