  • S7 Ep224: Oscar Rewind: A Serious Man

    09/08/2024 Duration: 47min

Sometimes a movie comes along and it just is a movie. We felt left out the loop here with A Serious Man. We didn't quite understand it, and thats okay. Not every movie is going to work for us. We enjoyed some of the performances, the cinematography and really struggled just about everywhere else. Do we need to delve further into the Coen filmography to better understand the way their minds work? Let us know on Twitter and Instagram! NerdWriter1- A Serious Man: Can Life Be Understood? • S7 Ep223: Oscar Rewind: Precious

    02/08/2024 Duration: 01h03min

We dive straight into our thoughts this week; feeling as though a cold open with jokes didn't fit how we wanted to talk about this movie. However, we did find humor in our discussion as well as some tears. Precious isn't a movie you go back to and rewatch if you can help it. We were deeply moved by the performances here and that's where we'll leave this movie. What did you think of this film? What are you good at? Why are you here? Let us know on Twitter and Instagram! • S7 Ep222: Oscar Rewind: Inglourious Basterds

    26/07/2024 Duration: 01h02min

Oh no! Did we like a Quentin Tarantino film?! While we haven't seen his entire filmography, when people talk about how great Tarantino is, Inglorious Bastards is his gold standard. From the perfect opening chapter, to the charming Christoph Waltz, and some truly beautiful shots, this quickly shot up to the tops of our rankings which took us all by surprise.  Tell us what you thought of this movie. Are you a Tarantino fan? Let us know on Twitter and Instagram! *Forgive Ana for mistaking "Für Elise" for "Moonlight Sonata" She means well and at least she's pretty. *Stay tuned to the very end for a special surprise. • S7 Ep221: Oscar Rewind: An Education

    19/07/2024 Duration: 57min

An Education was a formative film for us. It was the introduction to a favorite actress, the start to a love of independent films and a hard look at the whimsy of being a young impressionable girl. Coming back to this film fifteen years later and in a post #metoo world made for an interesting conversation. Tell us what you thought of this movie. • S7 Ep220: Oscar Rewind: District 9

    12/07/2024 Duration: 01h06min

District 9 did all the things we wanted Avatar to do. It was an exciting new Sci-Fi film telling a story with humanity at its center. We loved the production and sound design and gushed over new comer Sharlto Copley's emotionally grounded performance. What did you think of District 9?  Let us know on Twitter and Instagram! • S7 Ep219: Oscar Rewind: The Blind Side

    05/07/2024 Duration: 01h17s

This week we watched ‘White Savior’ the movie. All of us were on the same page about this movie being completely tone deaf to the actual story or actual Christian values. While we adore Sandra Bullock and will forever worship our congenial Queen, she was not enough to make this an enjoyable experience. Listen as we discuss how this “feel good” movie left feeling anything but good. What did you think of The Blind Side? Let us know on Twitter and Instagram! • S7 Ep218: Oscar Rewind: Avatar

    07/06/2024 Duration: 01h10min

We’ve seen this story before, right? White boy and his western civilization come to a new place and tries to make friends with the indigenous peoples, there is a love story as bland as water, and a heavy dose of environmentalism. We could name more than one movie with this plot…James Cameron, come on! We can’t even try and make excuses that the story is simple because the technology was so new and the focus of the movie because he regurgitated tired stories again in the sequel. The first sequel in a line of many. Fingers crossed it only gets better. What did you think of Avatar? 11/03/2024 Duration: 59min

It's the night of the show y'all! Oscar night 2024 has come and gone. The three of us are reunited and discussing our feelings on each winner. The highs, the lows, the "oh i guess that happened" and "Ana! Quit thirsting over Ryan Gosling, we're uncomfortable." Also, how many times are we going to have old people totally ruin the Best Picture announcement? Cheers to another year in the books. • S7 Ep215: Conversations with Oscar: The Zone of Interest

    01/03/2024 Duration: 01h03min

Looks like we made it! Here in the final episode of this years Conversations with Oscar Series we're talking about one of the more inventive movies we've seen. Jonathan Glazer crafted an uniquely told story that felt like a rain cloud hovering over the bright shiny Höss family. If we didn't know any better, we would think they were living a happy normal life. Only we do know better, and hearing the horrors happening in the background made this film hard to digest, but magnificent to watch. What did you think of The Zone of Interest? Let us know! • S7 Ep214: Conversations with Oscar: Poor Things

    27/02/2024 Duration: 01h33min

Yorgos Lanthimos has delivered another Best Picture nominee but this time it has all a little undecided how we feel. Visually, this movie is stunning. The costumes, production design, and cinematography are all some of the best modern movies have to offer, but here we are again with a story told by someone who can't fully understand the subject of the film. Listen as we talk about our issues with the story and gush about the visual elements we loved. What did you think of Poor Things? Let us know! • S7 Ep213: Conversations with Oscar: American Fiction

    23/02/2024 Duration: 01h21min

The time has come for us to talk about the secret sleeper amongst the Best Picture nominees. American Fiction seemingly came out of nowhere and scored five nominations. It's an important satirical comedy that surprised us with how much we enjoyed it. We're not sure it will walk away come Oscar night with any statues, but we're happy its in the conversation this year. What did you think of American Fiction? Let us know! • S7 Ep212: Conversations with Oscar: Past Lives

    20/02/2024 Duration: 01h22min

The combination of Celine Song's writing and directing alongside the powerful acting trio that is Greta Lee, Teo Yoo and John Magaro, created such a perfect harmony that we had a hard time finding anything to critique in Past Lives. Every choice was a masterclass in how quiet, intimate story telling can be incredibly impactful. • S7 Ep211: Conversations with Oscar: Oppenheimer

    16/02/2024 Duration: 01h41min

What can we add to the conversation on Oppenheimer that hasn't already been since its release last year? We continue our admiration of Nolan's work while still admonishing his weakness in writing complex female characters. We talk about this stacked cast featuring names and faces we love while also calling out the need for the presence of more color. We even dive a bit into how this movie feels given the context of our current political climate. Here at We Have Thoughts, we're giving it all to you. What did you think of Oppenheimer? • S7 Ep210: Conversations with Oscar: Anatomy of a Fall

    13/02/2024 Duration: 56min

We've hit the halfway point in our Conversations with Oscar series! Today we are talking about Anatomy of a Fall. A lot of the films this season are bigger in scope and feel, while this one is much smaller it still packs a giant punch. Justine Triet and Arthur Harari wrote a spectacular original screenplay that obfuscated the truth to not just the audience but to the star, Sandra Hüller herself. Listen to our thoughts here and see just how much further this season is dividing us. What did you think of Anatomy of a Fall? Let us know! • S7 Ep209: Conversations with Oscar: Maestro

    09/02/2024 Duration: 01h04min

What happens when you allow a person with too much theatre kid energy to make their passion project? Turns out you get this mess of a movie. We love Bradley Cooper, we love Carey Mulligan, and we love Leonard Bernstein, but we did not love this movie. From its messy script, to gimmicky black and white and unnecessary prosthetic we found ourselves questioning why this was nominated at all. What did you think of Maestro? Let us know! • S7 Ep208: Conversations with Oscar: Killers of the Flower Moon

    06/02/2024 Duration: 01h22min

We finally saw one of the most anticipated movies of last year, and we had some differing thoughts. The three hour Martin Scorsese epic tells the story of The Reign of Terror that occurred in Oklahoma in the early twentieth century. While we all agree it is visually a beautiful movie, we couldn't help but feel like we wanted to see this story from the point of view of the Osage. We always love when we disagree on a movie so give this one a listen and tell us where you stand. Let us know! Alexander Payne's quiet Christmas movie snuck up on us and stole our hearts.  It is hard to deny this film its accolades when it made us feel so warm and fuzzy. • S7 Ep206: Conversations with Oscar: Barbie

    30/01/2024 Duration: 01h09min

Hi Barbie! Who would have thought that a Barbie movie would be one of the best movies of the year and also Oscar Nominated? Greta Gerwig made sure that all of our preconceived notions on what a Barbie movie could be were completely wrong. She brought to life a moving story about what it means to be a woman today. Every word, performance, and detail was handled with such thought and care it is no surprise that it was nominated for Best Picture. What did you think of Barbie? • S6 Ep205: Oscar Rewind: The King's Speech

    28/12/2023 Duration: 01h26min

AND THE WINNER IS...a let down? We have had so much fun this season with some really great films. Films that we called perfect, modern classics, innovative, surprising; and it all led to one of the most predictable Best Picture Winners. Surprising to no one, this was not on the top of any of our rankings at the end of this season, but we can't say we didn't like it. Colin Firth gives a moving performance because he can do no wrong. Geoffrey Rush was a charming supporting actor that matched Firth toe to toe, and Tom Hooper wasn't as annoying as he could be. If this had been 2012's Best Picture Winner, this conversation might have been completely different. Tell us your thoughts on the 2011 race over on Twitter and Instagram. We're taking a short break before we come back with our Conversations with Oscar series- where we dive into the current Oscar season and as always, give our thoughts!
