#140 - The Science Of Dopamine Fasting: More Than Just A Fad ft. Dr. Cameron Sepah
20/01/2020 Duration: 01h44min"Dopamine Fasting" is a recent hot trend for improving productivity, mental discipline, and essentially structuring your time with what matters most to you...without modern distractions. Dopamine is neurotransmitter involved in our brain’s system for motivation, reward, and pleasure. Even when encountering seemingly innocent actions such as scrolling through your social media feed and gawking a cute puppy picture..dopamine is getting released in the brain. Could periodically abstaining from constant dopamine releases result in a better version of yourself? Dr. Cameron Sepah, a clinical professor of psychiatry at UC San Francisco and returning podcast guest, popularized dopamine fasting in August when he published a "Dopamine Fasting" guide and made the rounds in the press. “Taking a break from behaviors that trigger strong amounts of dopamine release (especially in a repeated fashion) allows our brain to recover and restore itself,” Sepah wrote in a Vox article. Without such breaks, we become habituated to hi

Less is More: The Case for Minimalist Fitness & Animal Nutrition · Jerry Teixeria · #139
07/01/2020 Duration: 01h36minMinimalism can be applied to improve various aspects of one's life. Jerry Teixeria, faced with the realities of raising children and attending to his family, going to the gym 6x a week quickly became unsustainable. Shifting his focus to bodyweight training & progressive calisthenics in the comforts of his own sunny backyard, Jerry reached his goals of physique, healthspan, & more...all by dropping the weights. This shift in his training approach even carried over to his nutrition protocol. Once a follower of the common "6 pre-prepped meals a day" advice preached by the traditional fitness community, Jerry simplified his eating habits and attained even greater results. From intermittent fasting (warrior diet) to eating a carnivore diet (correcting his autoimmune symptoms in the process), Jerry has run a wide gamut of self-experiments that he dives deep into on this week's podcast. In this episode, Geoff & Jerry discuss: The benefits of progressive bodyweight training and how one can get started. W

Immediately Reduce Glucose Levels Even After Drinking 75g of Sugar · Research Roundup (Ketone Ester)
11/12/2019 Duration: 12minIt's the holiday season, and that often means big, happy meals with friends and family. That apple pie (that you may or may not give in) would be a glucose challenge for your body to handle. What if you can preemptively improve your body's metabolic ability to handle that serving of pie with exogenous ketones? A pair of studies from University of British Columbia by Prof. Jonathan Little and Oxford Prof. Kieran Clarke researched how H.V.M.N. Ketone impacts glycemic response in both normal and obese populations. Before participants consumed a 75g glucose drink, they consumed a ketone monoester. The results? Reduced glycemic response and markers of insulin sensitivity. In this episode of Research Roundup, Geoffrey Woo explains the studies' design, analyzes the specific results, and finally, what one could take away from the science and apply it to their personal life. What NO Politician Is Saying About Healthcare · Geoff Talk
26/11/2019 Duration: 18minFixing healthcare costs & health insurance is part of standard political speeches & debates for US presidential candidates today. Everyone knows there’s a problem with the healthcare system. However, virtually all of the politician's discussions & proposals are based on bandaid solutions. The real issue? The healthcare crisis begins with our widespread health crisis. No politician is talking about how modern lifestyle and industrialized nutrition is destroying the health of millions of Americans. No politician is going to talk about this because telling the masses that their comfortable lifestyle is unhealthy and dangerous is not what they want to hear. Healthcare is primarily fixing people when they're broken. Our current society and culture are breaking too many people, too quickly. In this video, Geoffrey Woo dives deep into the issues of healthcare, population health, and what he believes we can all do to steer society in a better direction. Ketones Improve Intestinal Stem Cell Function - Research Roundup
30/10/2019 Duration: 13minA new study, conducted by MIT, explored how a ketogenic diet and exogenous ketones govern signaling biological programs that maintain intestinal stem cell function. We know ketone bodies like beta-hydroxybutyrate have signaling roles in the body and can help regulate things like appetite, metabolism, and neurotransmitter function. This study provides evidence that BHB itself may play a key mediating role in maintaining intestinal health too. Do ketones themselves (and not necessarily through fasting or a ketogenic diet) alone drive some of the metabolic and functional benefits? What were the exact findings? Let's find out. Heart Health & Diabetes: How Diet & Hypoxia Affects Metabolic Flexibility · Dr. Latt Mansor · #131
18/10/2019 Duration: 41minDr. Latt Mansor is the new Research Lead of H.V.M.N, and we're proud to share his fascinating research and upcoming work with our listeners! In Dr. Mansor's thesis study, he found that the diabetic heart retains metabolic flexibility to adapt to hypoxia. Hypoxia is a condition when the body lacks adequate oxygen. Since diabetic hearts are more prone to hypoxia, getting closer to understanding if it could adapt to it was an important finding. For context, diabetes and hypoxia have opposing effects on metabolic substrates in the heart. Diabetes promotes fatty acid oxidation and suppresses glycolysis, whereas adaptation to hypoxia suppresses fatty acid oxidation and promotes glycolysis. The key result of Dr. Mansor's paper was that diabetic hearts did indeed adapt to chronic hypoxia, by increasing glycolysis and decreasing fatty acid oxidation. In addition, Geoff & Dr. Mansor discuss: The implications of the study that was awarded the 2019 Nobel Prize in Medicine, which discovered how cells sense and adapt

Why We Age, and How We Don't Have To · David Sinclair's "Lifespan" [BOOK REVIEW]
01/10/2019 Duration: 29min"Aging is a disease, and that disease is treatable." In his new book, "Lifespan", David Sinclair has proposed a radical new theory of aging, suggesting that the aging hallmarks are symptoms of epigenetic changes that occur over time, but that the original genetic code remains very much intact. If we can reset the code, can we slow, stop or even reverse aging? Sinclair believes we can. Geoffrey Woo, after digesting "Lifespan", has formulated some interesting thoughts based on the information given and hypotheses proposed in the book. In this book review, Geoff details the core concepts of aging, the practical ways we can slow it, & his final verdict on Sinclair's bold theory for extending longevity.
