On this week... It's another mixed bag episode! Some new stuff and some old stuff. Sounds that vary and go from one extreme to the other. There's some new summer vibes from Jessi, Crush, and K.A.R.D. Also, I decided to play some groups I don't normally play, such as Dreamcatcher and Stray Kids. Plus, Mamamoo, Pentagon, I.O.I. and more! Then there's some hip-hop vibes near the end from Boi B and MaseWonder and a track that might seem similar... On this week... It's one of my favorites. We start off with some powerful indie/electronic female artists. It's a good mix of house, techno, dance, and electronic music from KME All-Stars Cifika, OOHYO, Peggy Gou, and Yeseo. Speaking of Yeseo, she just released her 1st LP titled, "DAMN RULES," and it's nothing short of amazing. Please go check it out and the rest of her work if you haven't heard her before. On this week... I'm in love with Crush's new album, "Wonderlost." The man can do no wrong. Everything he creates and/or is a part of is undoubtedly and consistently amazing. This release is no different. Packed with amazing features, catchy hooks, and Crush's quirky attitude, "Wonderlost" is truly a great piece of work and solidifies Crush as one of my favorite artists of all-time. Plus, it's more of a hip-hop/RnB focused episode. I've ventured away a bit in search of different sounds lately, but I have to come back to my ol' faithful sound every so often. On this week... It's another special episode and this one is an all English episode. Now while "English K-pop" may seem like an oxymoron, it's still an aspect of K-music and K-pop I'd like to explore. And how it's used has changed significantly over the years. On this episode, I start off with more current songs that are performed in English and end with more classic "English version" K-Pop. In past years, English versions of K-Pop were generally used as a tool to garner more Western listeners. This is especially true in the late 2000s to early 2010s, where companies tried to create English versions of the biggest K-Pop songs in an attempt to make a significant push into the Western mainstream. However, most of these "English versions" were pretty terrible, and understandably so. It's difficult to directly translate Korean to English and the songs would actually be more off-putting than relatable. Thankfully, in recent years this practice appears less often. On this week... It's all about the ladies. Somehow when putting this episode together it turned out to be all female groups and artists. I simply went through a bunch of new releases and started going for a boppy summer vibe and coincidentally all the tracks were from girls groups and female artists. On this week... I really had a good time putting this one together. The episode starts off groovy and smooth and about halfway through it shifts to a wide variety of hip-hop joints. I decided to start with that new Lee Jin-Ah and Gray song, "RUN." Absolutely amazing song. I've been stuck on it for some time now. In addition, some favorites return like HUS, Ban:jax, CIKi, and DPR Live. Some new stuff from Sandy, AOMG freshman HOAN, and Indigo Music. I also through in a SIk-K "Ring Ring" Edit I did a while back. I wasn't doing anything with it, so figured I would share it. And of course, I had to end with that Jay Park "SOJU" remix. On this week... It's all about the Sub-Units! We all love when our favorite groups take our favorite members and throw 'em in a separate smaller group. Then said group usually will take on a very different sound or style that we're used to. It's a great, fun thing in the K-pop world, much like cross company collaborations, super groups, or solo debuts. On this week... I've been very busy so this episode came together slowly over the course of a week. It's a good flow. I was surprised how well all the tracks came together. But it has everything from trap, boom-bap hip hop, funk, and grooves. One highlight would be the new single "I'm Sick" from Balming Tiger. I came across this guy unknowingly a while back when I found his acoustic version of "It G Ma" on YouTube. Now he performs under the name Balming Tiger and just released his debut single with a music video you should check out. On this week... It's a fun one. I had to start it off with that new Park Kyung of Block B, making his solo comeback with "INSTANT," featuring KME All-Star Sumin. If you haven't heard of her, get yourself familiar. I'm sure at this point I've played every song or feature of hers on the KME Mixtape. She is not only one of my absolute favorite Korean artists, but artists in general. On this week... The vibe starts off normal but halfway through we switch it up. We begin normally with some RnB joints but not from the usual normal rotation of artists. I take pride in trying to bring lesser known artists to the light because there is so much amazing music out there, we just need to discover it. Whenever I feel as though the episodes are starting to all sound the same, I have to switch it up. So halfway through, we turn to a more indie, rock sound, which is absolutely influenced by the new Hyukoh release. The sound ranges from shoegazing mellow moods to fast paced distortion. I can't stress enough how important this is not only for Korean music and Korean hip-hop but Asian representation in general.
