Most of us want to do the right thing. But, sometimes we need to consider the motivation behind our actions. Are we trying to do it to impress others? Are we hoping to get something in return? So, how do we keep from doing things for the wrong reasons? Join us for this message as we consider Jesus’ teaching on motivation in Matthew 6.

Here’s a saying that we’re going to talk about in this message, “Going the extra mile.” What does Jesus mean when he says that we, as followers of Christ, have to be willing to go the extra mile? Put simply it means this that we have to exceed the world’s expectations of us. Join us as we consider how Jesus challenges us to meet, and not just meet, but to exceed the world’s expectations.

Even as adults, it’s easy for us to slip into word games with the intent to deceive, rather than telling the truth. Interestingly, Jesus addresses that very topic in the Sermon on the Mount. In this week’s message, we will be looking at Matthew 5:33-37 and considering Jesus’ teaching on oaths, promises, and truthfulness.

In Matthew 5 Jesus says something that must have certainly grabbed the attention of his audience. He says, “If your right eye causes you to stumble, gouge it out and throw it away.” This graphic word picture still captures our attention today. But how literally we should take Jesus’ commands in this passage? Should we pluck out our eye or sever our hand if we are prone to sin? Join us as we explore this passage and learn Jesus’ purpose for using this kind of language.

This week we’re going to look at a fascinating passage where Jesus says to his disciples that unless your righteousness is even greater than those of religious leaders, you can’t enter the Kingdom of God. Well, that seems to set us up for defeat, doesn’t it? How can I be better than Billy Graham? Or how can I be better than Mother Teresa? As we look at the passage, I think Jesus’ words are going to surprise us.

What does it mean to be a citizen of God’s Kingdom? Jesus’ teaching, given to His disciples, describes what the life of a Christ-follower should look like. The Sermon on the Mount answers the question of what it means to “seek first the kingdom of God” in our lives. Jesus’ teaching amazed those who first heard his sermon and it will amaze you as well. Jesus gave us His Mission for the Church, and that mission is the Great Commission. In this message, Pastor Ryan Levis, the pastor of the Norfolk campus of Grace Bible Church, shares three things found in every church focused on the Great Commission.

God gave Jonah the responsibility of taking the message of the Lord to a distant nation. He was not only a reluctant prophet but I rebellious profit. The question we’ll be answering is, “Why should we care about world missions? And if we do care, how do we fulfill our Mission? “

Because the Internet makes information readily available, I often take different classes online. Right now I’m doing a study on astronomy, looking at the stars and the planets, their movement, and how they hang there in outer space. That’s what I’m learning. But, what are you studying? Jesus asks the same question, “What are you studying?” And one of the things that he wants us to consider is our culture. Jesus wants us to know our culture, not just so that we can know who’s on the Grammy awards, who’s on the radio, and all the movie stars. He’s not concerned that we know the latest trends and what styles to wear. Jesus wants us to know culture so that we will know how to relate to those around us so that we will know how to present the Gospel of Jesus Christ in culturally relevant ways. I remember someone telling me they didn’t want our church to be culturally relevant. I thought, well should we be culturally irrelevant? Many churches are doing an excellent job at that. One of our church’s core values is that as a church family, we want to empower young families in the church. We want children are both spiritually and emotionally healthy, and we believe that a child’s best chance at spiritual and emotional health is to come from those spiritually and emotionally healthy family. And this includes having spiritually and emotionally healthy fathers. You know, the expectations of fatherhood are pretty high because our children and even our society are dependent upon having spiritually and emotionally healthy fathers. We are dependent upon father’s getting it right, but even fathers, no, they often get it wrong. We can’t meet our expectations, much less the expectations that others place upon us, so how can we as fathers get it right? In particular, Peter was led to go to the house of Cornelius and had to relate to the Gentiles that were in Cornelius’ household. So, join us as we explore how we can learn to love people who are vastly different from ourselves.
