  • Stop Dreaming, Start Doing

    11/09/2014 Duration: 11min

Dreams can be interesting, scary, exciting, terrifying, or just plain bizarre.  The only thing consistent about dreams is that everybody has them. In fact, researchers have found that most people have multiple dreams each night, yet often can't remember them.  Many studies have been done about the phenomenon of dreaming. For instance, why do we forget most of our dreams?  Why are some of our dreams not in color?  Do men and women dream differently?  Do animals dream?  Can you control your dreams?  How blind people dream.  And the list goes on and on. But perhaps the most interesting aspect of dreaming for me, is that research has found that we are paralyzed while we dream. REM sleep, the stage of sleep we are in when dreaming occurs, is characterized by paralysis of our voluntary muscles.  This is known as REM atonia and prevents us from acting out our dreams while we sleep. Essentially, because our motor neurons are not stimulated, our body does not move. Though we often think of dreaming as part of the subc
