Most lacrosse goalies (and lacrosse coaches) think that the play is dead just after the save is made.   Not me.  I look at it as though the play is just beginning. As a coach, I believe that everything is possible with…progression. I”m sure your goalie can look at a lacrosse ball. I’m sure they can hold a lacrosse ball. They probably can throw a lacrosse ball. And they can probably catch a lacrosse ball. But at some point…and it doesn’t matter if they are a middle school goalie or a pro goalie…they will develop a fear of the ball. It may be temporary.  It may last a little while.  Or… It may force them out of the game. An often overlooked technique for lacrosse goalies is, what I call, the hop-step. It’s a way for goalies to move across the front of the net while keeping a rather stable base.  It has its benefits and its drawbacks. In this episode, I dissect some videos from MLL goalie (at the time) Sean Sconone.   Sean is a big dude.  And his footwork is excellent. And his technique, while rarely used by other goalies, is quite sound and something you should consider as you move in front of the goal. Enjoy.  Stay dangerous. A common mistake made by most lacrosse coaches who work with goalies is that they look at the goalie in the cage and think (wrongly) that the goalie should be centered in the cage based on the coach’s eyes. This is NOT true.  The lacrosse goalie should first be centered on where the shot should be leaving the stick (Which can be difficult to do at times.) AND, they should then be what I call “offset” to their off-stick side. This is what I call Offset Goaltending and I have been taught this idea for years.  It is based on the fact that if a lacrosse goalie is going to, primarily, try and stop the ball with the stick, then that stick should be more centrally located in the cage. This is quite a simple concept if you think about it, yet lacrosse goalies have been plagued by bad coaching that effectively puts them in a very difficult position to make saves, especially to the off-stick side. When a lacrosse goalie is stopping shots, they aren’t just stopping shots.  They are developing an understanding of shooters and their responses.  I call this the Shooters Library and a lacrosse goalies Save Library.  Just like when you went into the library (back in the day) and asked for a book, the librarian gave you a response.  It was the book you asked for. As a lacrosse goalie, you are responding to the shot.  You are learning how shooters shoot.  How they do what they do and when they can do it.  And you’re developing your response to all of those shots.  That’s your job. In today’s episode, we’re going to talk about how to develop your shooters’ library and what to expect from shooters in practice based on your level of development.  It’s gonna be a good one! Encouraging Lacrosse Goalies To Play Outside The Crease I want the lacrosse goalie of the future to be a threat outside of the crease more often than they are now.  If people are going to argue against more gear so they can be fast then let's at least make that happen! (Although if you’ve ever seen a baseball catcher run for a foul ball in pads you know that’s not a good excuse.) One of the ways to do that is to look at your goalie not as a goalie but as a midfielder in the crease.  Once they get the ball, they should behave just like any other player on the field.   But coaches, and Sphincter Mom on the sideline, often yell, “Get back in the CAAAAGE!!!!”   This is a massive mistake. As an aspiring lacrosse goalie and the family behind said, lacrosse goalie, you’re not always going to run into coaches who are as aspirational as you.  These are the coaches who are quick to tell you the odds of actually making it.  In their ‘experience’ you are just on a path to suffering some fate experienced by every other kid out there who had big dreams and didn’t make it. Snore. Now, that doesn’t give you permission to not listen to coaches.  Coaches are those who are going to help you get better.  That’s IF they are actually coaching.  This doesn’t include some twenty-something in flip-flops standing as a placeholder on the sideline.  I’m talking about COACHES. I've gone on record saying that we don't really have a legit 'pro' level in our sport.   Yes, we have the PLL.  But...   ...It looks like a professional sport but it really isn't.   My definition of professional sport is that athletes are able to make a living competing in their sport AND there are dollars spent on research to make the SPORT better.  Not just the equipment.   Any research that has improved lacrosse has really come from outside of lacrosse.  Other sports.  Other athletes.   With that, I've also been on record saying that the current level of goalie in college and pro lacrosse is NOT the best example of what can be.  You only have to look at athletes from other sports to see the gaps in a lacrosse goalie development.   And while I love to see goalies making big saves, it's often from the goals that go in and the bad plays where we learn.   And that's what I'm about...I want the lacrosse goalie of the future to be better than the goalies of today.  The goalies of the future will have to save per
