Changing The Game Of Lacrosse. One Goalie At a Time

Episodes

  • Your Lacrosse Goalie Can't Make a Save If They Are Out Of Position

    22/01/2022 Duration: 11min

Lacrosse goalies spend way too much time working on stance and not enough time working on a strategy in and around the crease. Today, we'll show a Syracuse lacrosse goalie making a pretty common error when it comes to stance in the crease. (We'll also talk about his horrible man-down defense too!) • This Harvard Field Lacrosse Goalie Needs to Learn To Use His Legs To Make Saves

    20/01/2022 Duration: 31min

In this clip from the Harvard Men's lacrosse program, I'll show you why even D1 goalies don't understand, what I call, "The point of no return" when making saves.   Download My Lacrosse Goalie Cheat Sheets and Goalie Scorecards Because You MUST Remember, the Lacrosse Goalie ‘Grade’ is NOT the Scoreboard!

  • The Benefits Of Playing JV Lacrosse When You Could Play Varsity

    18/01/2022 Duration: 24min

There may be a time when you feel you are better than an older goalie who is playing above you. Today, we'll talk about why playing on the JV could be the best thing for you this season, and maybe next season.   Download My Lacrosse Goalie Cheat Sheets and Goalie Scorecards Because You MUST Remember, the Lacrosse Goalie ‘Grade’ is NOT the Scoreboard!

  • Why Lacrosse Goalies Aren't Fearless

    15/01/2022 Duration: 30min

There is a myth among the casual, and even the experienced viewer of lacrosse goalies and that is the assumption that lacrosse goalies are fearless. They are not. We will discuss why they are not fearless and why you can't train for no fear, you must train to mitigate fear.   Download My Lacrosse Goalie Cheat Sheets and Goalie Scorecards Because You MUST Remember, the Lacrosse Goalie ‘Grade’ is NOT the Scoreboard!

  • What Ruins Most Women's Lacrosse Goalies Chances

    13/01/2022 Duration: 18min

Of all the goalies I work with, the girls are the best.  (sorry boys) They are smart.  Hard-working.  They seem to have a higher ‘give-a-shit’ factor than the boys do. But in the end…this ONE thing always gets them in the end.  Today we’ll discuss what that is.  Who affects the most?  Why is it important?  And what to do about it?   Download My Lacrosse Goalie Cheat Sheets and Goalie Scorecards Because You MUST Remember, the Lacrosse Goalie ‘Grade’ is NOT the Scoreboard!

  • Improving Throwing Accuracy In a Lacrosse Goalie

    11/01/2022 Duration: 29min

Most lacrosse goalies (and lacrosse coaches) think that the play is dead just after the save is made.   Not me.  I look at it as though the play is just beginning. Make the opposing team pay for bad shots that you save with deadly outlet passes to start your team's offense. Today we’ll talk about how to do just that.   Download My Lacrosse Goalie Cheat Sheets and Goalie Scorecards Because You MUST Remember, the Lacrosse Goalie ‘Grade’ is NOT the Scoreboard!

  • What A Lacrosse Goalie Should Focus On Between Now and The Spring

    08/01/2022 Duration: 20min

New year new goalie, right?  Well, not necessarily.  Right about now, if you’re thinking about lacrosse, you’re probably thinking that you’re a bit behind the eight ball.  Today we’re going to talk about what you need to focus on between now and your spring season.   Download My Lacrosse Goalie Cheat Sheets and Goalie Scorecards Because You MUST Remember, the Lacrosse Goalie ‘Grade’ is NOT the Scoreboard!

  • Dealing With Fear And The Lacrosse Goalie

    16/12/2021 Duration: 18min

As a coach, I believe that everything is possible with…progression. I”m sure your goalie can look at a lacrosse ball. I’m sure they can hold a lacrosse ball. They probably can throw a lacrosse ball. And they can probably catch a lacrosse ball. But at some point…and it doesn’t matter if they are a middle school goalie or a pro goalie…they will develop a fear of the ball. It may be temporary.  It may last a little while.  Or… It may force them out of the game. Today we’re going to talk about fear and the lacrosse goalie and what you can do to avoid tremendous disappointment. Enjoy.  And be dangerous. • Learning The Hop Step For Lacrosse Goalie Positioning

    14/12/2021 Duration: 16min

An often overlooked technique for lacrosse goalies is, what I call, the hop-step. It’s a way for goalies to move across the front of the net while keeping a rather stable base.  It has its benefits and its drawbacks. In this episode, I dissect some videos from MLL goalie (at the time) Sean Sconone.   Sean is a big dude.  And his footwork is excellent. And his technique, while rarely used by other goalies, is quite sound and something you should consider as you move in front of the goal. Enjoy.  Stay dangerous. • What is Offset Lacrosse Goaltending

    11/12/2021 Duration: 30min

A common mistake made by most lacrosse coaches who work with goalies is that they look at the goalie in the cage and think (wrongly) that the goalie should be centered in the cage based on the coach’s eyes. This is NOT true.  The lacrosse goalie should first be centered on where the shot should be leaving the stick (Which can be difficult to do at times.) AND, they should then be what I call “offset” to their off-stick side. This is what I call Offset Goaltending and I have been taught this idea for years.  It is based on the fact that if a lacrosse goalie is going to, primarily, try and stop the ball with the stick, then that stick should be more centrally located in the cage. This is quite a simple concept if you think about it, yet lacrosse goalies have been plagued by bad coaching that effectively puts them in a very difficult position to make saves, especially to the off-stick side. In today’s episode, we’re going to talk about why Offset Goaltending is so important for lacrosse goalies and how you can i

  • Developing Your Shooters Library And Expectation of Shooters in Practice.

    09/12/2021 Duration: 22min

When a lacrosse goalie is stopping shots, they aren’t just stopping shots.  They are developing an understanding of shooters and their responses.  I call this the Shooters Library and a lacrosse goalies Save Library.  Just like when you went into the library (back in the day) and asked for a book, the librarian gave you a response.  It was the book you asked for. As a lacrosse goalie, you are responding to the shot.  You are learning how shooters shoot.  How they do what they do and when they can do it.  And you’re developing your response to all of those shots.  That’s your job. In today’s episode, we’re going to talk about how to develop your shooters’ library and what to expect from shooters in practice based on your level of development.  It’s gonna be a good one! Enjoy.   And be sure to leave a comment, like, some love.  Share this with someone who needs to hear it.   Download My Lacrosse Goalie Cheat Sheets and Goalie Scorecards Because You MUST Remember, the Lacrosse Goalie ‘Grade’ is NOT the Scoreboar

  • Encouraging Lacrosse Goalies To Play Outside The Crease

    07/12/2021 Duration: 30min

Encouraging Lacrosse Goalies To Play Outside The Crease I want the lacrosse goalie of the future to be a threat outside of the crease more often than they are now.  If people are going to argue against more gear so they can be fast then let's at least make that happen! (Although if you’ve ever seen a baseball catcher run for a foul ball in pads you know that’s not a good excuse.) One of the ways to do that is to look at your goalie not as a goalie but as a midfielder in the crease.  Once they get the ball, they should behave just like any other player on the field.   But coaches, and Sphincter Mom on the sideline, often yell, “Get back in the CAAAAGE!!!!”   This is a massive mistake. Today we’re going to talk about how to encourage a goalie to play outside the crease.  And much more! Enjoy.  And be sure to leave a comment, a thumbs-up, like.  Share the love!   Download My Lacrosse Goalie Cheat Sheets and Goalie Scorecards Because You MUST Remember, the Lacrosse Goalie ‘Grade’ is NOT the Scoreboard!

  • How To Work With a Coach Who Is Stuck In His Ways?

    04/12/2021 Duration: 20min

As an aspiring lacrosse goalie and the family behind said, lacrosse goalie, you’re not always going to run into coaches who are as aspirational as you.  These are the coaches who are quick to tell you the odds of actually making it.  In their ‘experience’ you are just on a path to suffering some fate experienced by every other kid out there who had big dreams and didn’t make it. Snore. Now, that doesn’t give you permission to not listen to coaches.  Coaches are those who are going to help you get better.  That’s IF they are actually coaching.  This doesn’t include some twenty-something in flip-flops standing as a placeholder on the sideline.  I’m talking about COACHES. I consider myself a pretty forward-thinking coach.  But not every coach is like that.  In fact, many are stuck thinking back to the days that they played and that’s all they understand.  That’s a real problem in the sport of lacrosse.  More so than any other sport.  There are, in fact, lacrosse coaches who think those chest protectors, slow goa

  • More PLL Lacrosse Goalies Looking Silly

    30/11/2021 Duration: 36min

I've gone on record saying that we don't really have a legit 'pro' level in our sport.   Yes, we have the PLL.  But...   ...It looks like a professional sport but it really isn't.   My definition of professional sport is that athletes are able to make a living competing in their sport AND there are dollars spent on research to make the SPORT better.  Not just the equipment.   Any research that has improved lacrosse has really come from outside of lacrosse.  Other sports.  Other athletes.   With that, I've also been on record saying that the current level of goalie in college and pro lacrosse is NOT the best example of what can be.  You only have to look at athletes from other sports to see the gaps in a lacrosse goalie development.   And while I love to see goalies making big saves, it's often from the goals that go in and the bad plays where we learn.   And that's what I'm about...I want the lacrosse goalie of the future to be better than the goalies of today.  The goalies of the future will have to save per

  • How To Improve Hand Speed In a Lacrosse Goalie

    27/11/2021 Duration: 16min

When lacrosse coaches and lacrosse parents get frustrated they think to themselves, “I just wish my goalie was FASTER.  I wish their hands were FASTER!” Like if their lacrosse goalie was a boxer they’d be better in the cage. On one side of things, fast hands make sense, but to create fast hands there is SO much more that needs to happen. In today’s video, we’re going to talk about what your goalie needs to create fast hands and what they need to be thinking about to get them.   Download My Lacrosse Goalie Cheat Sheets and Goalie Scorecards Because You MUST Remember, the Lacrosse Goalie ‘Grade’ is NOT the Scoreboard!

  • Don't Let Scholarship Money Sway You

    25/11/2021 Duration: 10min

I had a discussion this week with the father of one of the top high school lacrosse goalies in the country. This goalie is getting recruited by some of the top D1 teams in the country, and yet, the final decision for this goalie is coming down to scholarship dollars. My question is, “Why?” We’ll discuss.   Download My Lacrosse Goalie Cheat Sheets and Goalie Scorecards Because You MUST Remember, the Lacrosse Goalie ‘Grade’ is NOT the Scoreboard!

  • More Discussion On Angles For Lacrosse Goalies

    21/09/2021 Duration: 19min

A few weeks ago Coach Edwards talked about angles and where a goalie should be standing in relation to a shooter’s stick and not their body. This resulted in a lot of confusion from some parents and their goalies who had been coached incorrectly at an event this summer. In today’s episode, we’ll talk about where a goalie should be lining up in relation to the shooter and what to do about it. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ When you’re ready...check THIS out: Do you know your goalie's save percentage? • Video Review Of A Lacrosse Goalie Save/Not a Save

    19/09/2021 Duration: 24min

In today’s episode we’ll discuss if this was a save or not and why that matters. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ When you’re ready...check THIS out: Do you know your goalie's save percentage? • What Tweaks To A Lacrosse Goalie Stance Make The Biggest Improvements

    17/09/2021 Duration: 24min

I got two emails this past month from frustrated lacrosse goalie sick of being told to change their stance. The question was, “What changes do I need to make that are going to make the biggest impact to my stance. I’m sick of tweaking!” I hear ya. The conversation around lacrosse goalie stances has gotten so bastardized we will set the record straight. What do you need to change? How should you stand? Where should your hands and feet be? This is it...all you need to know no matter what your age. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ When you’re ready...check THIS out: Do you know your goalie's save percentage?
