To worship any other (false) god than this God means we are setting ourselves up for failure and ultimately death, rather than life as God intends us to live as his image-bearing creatures. What are we to make of the Ten Commandments? Are they God's attempt to rain on our parade and spoil our fun or do they point to something quite different? God has blessed his people. He has called them to act in certain ways, to journey to certain places, and to do this trusting that what is needed will be provided. God pours out his blessing upon his people not because they stand deserving of it, but rather because it is what he has determined is right. Must is a hard word. It states unequivocally that what is being said has to happen. Not often do we hear this word, but when we do we can find ourselves wondering "why?" What is the purpose, and what if the must isn't carried out? This week's Gospel defines a must for both the Messiah, Jesus, and those who would be his disciples.
