The original work was published in French as Satrapi is part French and Iranian and spent much of her adult life in France. She had a first-hand look at the Islamic Revolution in 1979 when her family members were jailed for being activists. Satrapi vividly recalls being forced to wear a veil, how women’s rights were taken away quickly during this time, and how this affected her education, her family situation, and the eventual war with Iraq.
