But for millions around the world, there is a feminine personification of death and she is called “Santa Muerte.” She is associated with safe passage to the afterlife and is the patron saint of people who live on the fringes of society who often face violence and death. Her followers have also come to include the LGBT community and people who have been marginalized or whose jobs put them at a risk of death including the military and police.
