Dr Patricia Shuter has two Masters’ degrees (research and coursework) in health promotion, and a PhD specialising in dementia caregiving, in addition to writing or contributing to writing articles for academic journals and presenting at national and international conferences. Her thesis examined potential predictors of, and protective factors for, complicated grief and its correlation with health outcomes in primary family caregivers of people with dementia. Trish made the transition from the education sector to the health sector via aged care and more specifically dementia care, with a focus on the social and lifestyle aspect. Today Sandra talks to Trish about her thesis and how the carer can experience grief even when the person experiencing dementia is still alive.
