Winstrol is one of the most famous steroids of all time, mainly thanks to a man named Ben Johnson. In 1988, Johnson was the reigning world champion in the 100-meter dash, widely considered the most prestigious of all track and field events. He had set a world record a year before, beating Carl Lewis with a time of 9.83 seconds. He was instantly propelled to world fame, reportedly making almost $500,000 a month from endorsements. He was showered in accolades including the Lou Marsh Trophy and Lionel Conacher Award, and was named the Associated Press Athlete of the Year for 1987. Johnson cemented his status as the golden boy of track and field on September 24, 1988, in one of the most competitive 100-meter races ever run, when he sprinted to an Olympic gold medal and a new world record of 9.79 seconds.
