Yep, it's ok.  Let them fail sometimes.  Everybody does it at some point (some of us more than others).  Since everybody fails at some point, shouldn't we as parents allow them to do it under our care where we can teach them to recover and succeed post-failure?   That's Jim's preference and he thinks it should be one of your parenting priorities.
