My dad was the American consul in Udorn Thani, a forward CIA and special operations base for missions into Laos, and later on, into North Vietnam. I attended high school in the Washington DC area and graduated in 1977 from Colby College in Waterville, Maine, with a degree in English Literature. Though mostly raised in cities, I had always dreamed of living in a wilderness setting, and set out for Alaska in 1979.
