Gender Quest
30/07/2023On this episode of Queering the Air 3CR, our co-host, Sasja Sÿdek conducted an interview with the founders of GenderQuest, Violet Minehan and Lilith Plummer.A mentoring program for individuals who identify as transgender, gender-diverse, or are questioning their gender identity has been launched by RMIT students. Known as GenderQuest, this program offers an online platform where people can connect with mentors, engage in group gaming sessions, socialize with like-minded peers, and access a wide array of resources and trans-inclusive external services. The founders, Violet Minehan and Lilith Plummer, recognized the difficulties that come with navigating gender identity and aimed to establish a program that not only offers support and resources but also creates a supportive community for individuals facing similar challenges. The team is currently focused on expanding GenderQuest to accommodate a vibrant community of thousands of transgender and gender-diverse individuals throughout Australia.https://genderques

16/07/2023This episode, the focus was on NAIDOC Week - For Our Elders. Sasja shared her experiences at the NAIDOC Pride gala night, where she received the esteemed Deadly Fem sash. Additionally, she discussed the NAIDOC march that took place on 7th July 2023 at midday, where Miss Katalyna joined her, followed by attending the NAIDOC concert at Federation Square. Sasja played several speeches by our respected elders from the NAIDOC march 2023. Singapore - Section 377A - The Decriminalisation Sex Between Men
07/05/2023Sasja invited a very special guest from her hometown, Singapore.Kay is a 28 year old trans guy who’s no stranger to change. He started transitioning right before he quit his job and recently moved to Narrm, Melbourne, and began studying to be a counsellor. In his spare time, he enjoys cooking and reading, and has recently taken up knitting. If all goes well, he might have a beanie right before the weather turns truly cold.Sasja and Kay discussed everything Singapore of course and the recent repeal of 377A - Singapore’s parliament has decriminalised sex between men, but has amended the constitution to effectively block full marriage equality. The British colonial-era law penalised sex between men with up to two years in jail, although the statute was not actively enforced. He works for a community organisation called Whittlesea Community Connections based in Epping. As a queer migrant working in the community services sector, Anas is passionate about creating safe spaces for LGBTQA+ people from multicultural backgrounds. Through organisational development and community engagement, he has been working to create these spaces in the northern suburbs of Melbourne particularly for young LGBTQA+ people. 26/03/2023RAMADAN - QUEER IFTAR Queer Iftar is an event that brings together members of the LGBTQ+ community focusing asylum seekers, migrants and refugees during the holy month of Ramadan. It's a celebration of the intersectionality of being Muslim and queer. The event aims to create a safe and inclusive space for LGBTQ+ Muslims who often feel excluded during religious events due to their sexual orientation or gender identity. The traditional Iftar meal is shared, and discussions on various topics relevant to the community takes place.
