It’s Hard to Grow without Employees
01/09/2020 Duration: 04minTwo questions that Erik often gets asked by new entrepreneurs is whether they should hire employees and if now is the right time. In order to really grow your business you will eventually want to hire employees. Employees bring different skill sets to the table and allow you to grow the business while they do the work of the business. It's hard to provide a recurring service or product over and over without help and try to grow your business at the same time. Eventually you're going to want that help. Erik believes the right time to hire your first employee is when you have too much work to do on your own and you have enough money in the bank to pay that employee comfortably for at least 3 to 6 months. Keep in mind that hiring someone means paying wages, and possibly taxes and benefits if they’re brought on as an employee and not a contractor. — Erik J. Olson is an award-winning digital marketer & entrepreneur. The Founder & CEO of Array Digital, he is also the host of the Journey to $100 Mil

Avoid Becoming a Commodity
31/08/2020 Duration: 04minOne of the things Erik has tried hard to avoid here at Array Digital is for us or any of our offerings to become a commodity. A commodity is something you could buy pretty much from anywhere and the customer doesn’t care where they buy it from. There are services that we could offer here that a lot of other TV stations, radio stations, digital marketing agencies, etc. will offer their clients that are straight up commodities. For example, display advertising which is where you go on the Internet and see a pop-up ad. You can buy this from literally any company and granted they’ll all give you reasons why you should buy it from them but it’ll pretty much always be the same. If the client could just buy it from the original source that we’d be getting it from, why wouldn’t they just buy it themselves? We have to bring something else to the table. If you are a commodity, then your customers or clients could get this thing from anywhere. Why would you want to build a business around an offering that you don’

New Referrals on Our New Segments
29/08/2020 Duration: 04minA few weeks ago, we made a really big change here. In the past, we worked with any client in any industry because 1) it was really easy to work with whoever came to us, and 2) we never had any issue with it. But as we worked with clients in different industries, we kept struggling with how to learn them. After digging into our financials, we realized 55% of our income fell into 3 industries: law, medical, and home services. We’ve reworked our marketing to surround those 3 industries and we’ve noticed we’re getting a lot of referrals to people in those 3 segments. What’s happened is that by us saying that we focus on these segments, it’s given people a lot more clarity about what we do and specialize in. It’s so much easier for people to filter their contacts down to the kinds of people we want to work with. It has led to really good referrals straight from the people in our immediate contacts. — Erik J. Olson is an award-winning digital marketer & entrepreneur. The Founder & CEO of Array Digital,

Have You Forgotten What Proper Business Attire Is?
28/08/2020 Duration: 04minFor the last 5-6 months, Erik has been working from home probably like you and probably in what would be considered “inappropriate business attire.” He realized quickly that even jeans became uncomfortable. But as the weeks turned into months and months turned into almost half a year, Erik really hasn’t changed those habits too much except now, instead of sweatpants, he’s wearing shorts everyday. His friend, Zach Miller (@ZachMillerSays), asked him on his Instagram live, “How do you figure out what to wear on a day-to-day basis?” During COVID, it’s pretty easy; there’s no reason to get dressed up. — Erik J. Olson is an award-winning digital marketer & entrepreneur. The Founder & CEO of Array Digital, he is also the host of the Journey to $100 Million Flash Briefing and daily podcast, and the organizer of the Marketers Anonymous monthly meetups. — Kevin Daisey is an award-winning digital marketer & entrepreneur. Giftology: The Power of Gifts to Your New Clients
27/08/2020 Duration: 03minThink about your top-tier clients and give them a gift along the way in the onboarding period and make this a part of your process. Once a certain milestone is hit with that customer, you may want to give that client a gift, something that you put real time and energy into. For us, a client that spends more than $5,000 a month with us, we spend a couple hundred dollars on a gift for them. During the kickoff process, we listen really closely to the client, the people that are important to them and/or their company. Include this person on the gift to really surprise and excite them. — Erik J. Olson is an award-winning digital marketer & entrepreneur. Days Stuck on Video Calls
25/08/2020 Duration: 04minEver since COVID hit, we’ve been doing nonstop video calls. At Array Digital, we use Google Meet and now we are constantly meeting by video call. Often Erik finds himself on back-to-back video calls with no time in between to take a break. This especially happens when he allows video calls to go over a 15-minute block. He allows them to go on because it’s a worthwhile use of his time to have these conversations both internally and externally. — Erik J. Olson is an award-winning digital marketer & entrepreneur. Video Sales Tactic
24/08/2020 Duration: 03minWe’ve been using video platforms as a sales tactic recently. The 2 we use the most are Vidyard and Loom, both Chrome extensions with free versions. All you do is start a new video and it will record the screen behind you with a small image of you narrating or talking. Kevin has been using this to go into a prospect’s website so that he can illustrate the points he’s making, areas of improvement, etc. He then sends this link in the body of the email to get their attention. It’s been great for prospecting because the person is curious why their website is in the image. — Erik J. Olson is an award-winning digital marketer & entrepreneur. How Leading Marketers and Entrepreneurs Are Growing Their Business
23/08/2020 Duration: 03minEvery Friday at noon Eastern, we host a #LunchtimeLive where either Kevin or Erik will invite a guest, typically a top marketer or entrepreneur. We bring them on so they can discuss what they’ve learned in their journey to building a company or marketing engine. We get to ask all the questions we want answers to like how they became successful and potentially use those same methods for Array Digital. By hosting this live, we get to know the answers to questions we genuinely want to know about. We also ask our audience if they have any questions and we will ask those of the guest. If you join us, you can also ask your own questions. You can learn exactly what these professionals are doing with their brands. — Erik J. Olson is an award-winning digital marketer & entrepreneur. Not Everyone Is a Fit for Your Business
22/08/2020 Duration: 03minNot every prospect or lead you get is going to be a fit for your business and that’s ok. You should be saying no when you know it’s the right thing to do. If it’s a client that you won’t be able to perform well for or doesn’t sit right with your team, it’ll work out better for both parties if you say no. To qualify our needs, we must answer the following yes or no questions: Are they in one of our focus industries: home services, law, or medical? Are they looking to aggressively grow their business? Did they do $2 million in revenue the previous year? Are you able to spend at least $5,000/month on marketing and advertising? — Erik J. Olson is an award-winning digital marketer & entrepreneur. The Impact of Client Onboarding
20/08/2020 Duration: 04minOnboarding is so important: the communication, their expectations, the step-by-step process. It all comes into play and affects how your client feels about you, how long they stick around, and how likely they are to refer you. If you have a really great onboarding experience, they are more likely to look the other way if you do make any mistakes than if you had a less than satisfactory onboarding process. We recently hired a company to do some work for us and both Kevin and Erik were very impressed by their onboarding process. We are going to take some lessons learned from this company and apply them to our own process. — Erik J. Olson is an award-winning digital marketer & entrepreneur. 19/08/2020 Duration: 03minWe are looking to hire a digital sales specialist. You will be selling digital marketing including websites, SEO, online advertising, and social media. Tell everyone you know about your new business
18/08/2020 Duration: 05minA mistake a lot of brand new entrepreneurs make is keeping their new business venture on the down low. It’s a defensive mechanism because if they don’t tell everyone they know, they haven’t fully committed to it. They have an easy out if they end up failing and can go back to what they were doing before without the shame of failing. You need to be 100% in mentally and emotionally. You need to tell every single person that you know what you’re doing. You can do a podcast, a social media live, or a regular social media post. There are better ways to do that: 1-on-1 mass communication. Erik created a written announcement, mailed it through snail mail to about 250 people he knew saying if you know anyone who can use my services, let me know. At the time, he got 1 deal from doing this. It worked well for a deal flow but it also forced Erik to commit 100% to what he was doing. — Erik J. Lost a deal? Don't worry about it.
17/08/2020 Duration: 04minYears ago, Erik was obsessed with Shark Tank and he’d watch it religiously every single week. One piece of advice shared on the show has stuck with Erik for years: “It’s just a deal. There are millions out there like that.” At the time, Erik was in the beginning of his entrepreneurial journey, dealing with 1-2 deals at a time and thinking it must be nice to have that mindset. Now, he realizes there are millions of deals out there; you just have to go find them. How? Have a very specific message to a very specific niche. — Erik J. How we onobard a guest for Lunchtime Live
16/08/2020 Duration: 06minEvery Friday at noon Eastern time, we hold a Facebook live and bring on a guest to talk about how they built their business or marketing machine. We send out invitations to potential guests and it got to the point where we were sending them out to so many people, it became hard to track. So we came up with a process and it’s pretty clever if we do say so ourselves. — Erik J. Olson is an award-winning digital marketer & entrepreneur. Transition from sales to operations
15/08/2020 Duration: 04minOur sales team works to bring on new clients, making presentations to explain to the client the current issues they are facing, how we can fix them, and why Array Digital is the best. Once they have brought on a new client, they are transitioned to the operations team. We’ve worked on this transition a lot. We want sales to be focused on selling so we’ve made it a quick transition from sales to operations. This includes an onboarding email in which the salesperson will introduce the client to our Project Manager, Jamal, and our Creative Director, Jake. — Erik J. I knew my destiny was out of my hands and it scared me
14/08/2020 Duration: 06minErik is in the final part of writing and editing his book, Million Dollar Journey. It took 8 years of hard work, soul searching, and making a lot of mistakes to get to the point of making $1 million in revenue, a point only 4% of business reach. In it, there’s a particular line that jumped out at him. It took place when he was working at his last job as an employee and had a lot of uncertainty about where he was going in life. The line is “I knew that my destiny was 100% out of my hands and that scared the shit out of me.” Why would that scare him and why should that scare you? — Erik J. The big deal difference
13/08/2020 Duration: 05minWe have deals and then we have big deals. A deal is normal business typically from $2500 to $10,000 a month. Everything is based around a deal that size. But when we get a big deal, processes are changed and exceptions are made, new innovations and efficiencies are created because we’ll be working with a much larger company. Big deals may require new team members to be able to manage the new heavier workload, it may require new software that’s more innovative than what we were previously using, it might require completely new processes altogether! These big deals are really exciting because they allow you to innovate and improve your services for everyone else. — Erik J. Olson is an award-winning digital marketer & entrepreneur. If you can't get anyone to buy from you it doesn't matter what else you do
12/08/2020 Duration: 04minOne of the things Erik learned early on in his entrepreneurial journey was that he has to sell something people actually want to buy. If you are building a business, it needs to have an offering that is so easy for anyone to grasp that you don’t have to spend a ton of time explaining it. If it takes more than 10 seconds to say what you do, you will probably lose that opportunity. An offering should be super simple. What can you sell right now? Speed here is super important. Find the minimum thing that you can sell and start selling it very quickly then go find someone that will buy it. That’s how to get into business 101. — Erik J. Don't let anyone badmouth your employee
11/08/2020 Duration: 03minIf you’ve ever had someone badmouth one of your employees, you have to very quickly make sure you don’t allow that to happen. This can come from your management, other employees, maybe even your clients. Everyone makes mistakes but we also take a lot of preventative measures to make sure those mistakes we make never happens again. We are a learning organization and we fix our process to make sure things like this don’t happen ever again. You have to make sure no one badmouths your employees by defending them if they had good intentions. Most of your employees want to do good work and when you allow someone to badmouth them, it breaks down the morale and the fabric of your company and you cannot allow that to happen. If you allow it once, it will continue and permeate into your culture and that is the last thing you want. — Erik J. Olson is an award-winning digital marketer & entrepreneur.
