I Don't Get It

We wrap up our time at Expanse 2015 with a round-up of reflections, reactions, and musings about Edmonton’s only multi-day movement arts celebration. Talk about the body, the feminine, and the abundance of soloists abounds.

A busy Day Four at Expanse features the Alberta Grown showcase, and we catch up with Parts+Labour Danse, Freya Olafson, Krista Posyniak, and Tony Tran, who gives us a lesson in vouge. Then we cap off the night with Rebecca Sawdon and her Fabulous Beast.

Day three at Expanse sees Anastasia Maywood, winner of the Good Women Dance New Work Award, visit the coat check. Then we catch up with Christine Frederick of Alberta Aboriginal Arts for a conversation about indigenous representation in arts, liberal sensitivities, and the complicated lines that art sometimes has to cross.

Expanse Day 2: We track down Lara Kramer and the cast of Native Girl Syndrome to talk about realism in performance, and Kate Stashko visits the coat check hot off the heels of her premiere showing of The Matryoshka Series in the East Meets West program.

Our hosts chuckled all the way through last week’s visit by Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo. An all-male comedy dance troupe, the Trocks dragged out all the sacred cows of the ballet world and beat them with lipstick and pointe shoes.

Alberta Ballet solves the annual writer’s dilemma of finding unique ways to cover The Nutcracker by casting our hosts in the opening party scene. Paul sees the show for the first time from both sides of the stage, and Fawnda gets hooked into a big, gold dress—all in this very special holiday episode.

Paul and Fawnda take in Broadway Across Canada’s Flashdance the Musical. They got it—but does it even matter? Also an extra special announcement about our inglorious hosts taking the stage next month, and a couple up and comings for your December.
