We’re talking about the biggest and potentially best lake of the Gunflint Trail this week with some seriously quality input from both Voyageur and Tuscarora Outfitters to help us elucidate the mysteries that the giant has to offer. Saganaga Lake is one of the largest lakes in all of the Boundary Waters and offers the most overnight paddling permits of any entry point (#55) on the Gunflint Trail.  With its massive size comes an almost endless number of campsites running the gamut from some of the worst we have ever seen to some of the nicest. We’re reviewing one of our favorite routes this week. This route starts at the end of the Gunflint Trail and is perfect for those wanting to do it all. It has waterfalls, large and small lakes, solitude, historic sites, cliffs, and excellent fishing. You must be willing to paddle; Knife Lake, the farthest point on this route, is about halfway between Ely and the Gunflint Trail. Brule Lake is one of the largest lakes in the Boundary Waters that does not allow any motorboats and its direct access makes it a great option for quick weekend trip, or for those looking to introduce kids or first timers to the wilderness experience. As soon as you paddle away from the boat launch you are in the BWCA and you could be set up in a campsite within 30 minutes if you really wanted. Its an express episode on the Frost River this week! Frost Lake is in the heart of the BWCA and few people venture this far in. Frost River itself can be a challenge because of the number of turns and you definitely want to keep your map out at all times on the river. This is a great route for those wanting to cover some ground and paddle smaller lakes. Smaller lakes give more protection with wind. You’ll enjoy some river paddling south of Ham Lake and have some good wildlife opportunities. This route can be traveled in either direction, although with predominant winds from the west you may want to start at Cross Bay Lake.
