  • How Pixel 4 is Copying Face ID

    01/08/2019 Duration: 12min

I was going to try and cram in Apple earnings analysis today but I think I’ll save it for tomorrow after all the headlines and hindsights hot takes have had time to cool down. Instead, let’s talk about Google’s big Pixel 4 leak-nouncement. Yeah, another one. Basically, it’s Face ID. But is it a cutting edge reinvention or just a lame retread? • iPhone 5G x3, MacBook Pro $3K, Siri Scandal Redux

    30/07/2019 Duration: 11min

Another huge milestone for us and what we’re all building here together — This channel just hit 20 million views. Almost 250 videos and 122 thousand subscribers since we started, it’s humbling to think this little idea for an optimistic, deeply researched, steak-over-sizzle, facts-over-flex, punching up and never down conversation about technology and culture we started just over a year ago has found an audience as smart and savvy and frankly as magnificent as all of you. I know we’re not huge yet by YouTube standards, but I’m truly grateful for all of you, and I really appreciate each and every one of you for hitting that subscribe button, Superman smashing that bell gizmo so you actually get notified when new videos drop, and sharing your favorites with your friends so they can join us and we can keep all of this going and growing. • Why People Are Freaking Out Over Siri Privacy

    29/07/2019 Duration: 27min

Humans listen to segments of our voices captured by Siri, Google, and Alexa to help train the natural language engines. It's always been done this way but it's never gotten much attention. Not until Bloomberg reported on it all back in April, focusing on Alexa. But the VRT NWS piece on Google and now The Guardian’s piece on Siri have really caught fire. Especially the latter. Maybe because, unlike the others, it front-loaded the part about sex, crime, medicine, and business. Or maybe just because it came out after Apple started putting big privacy billboards up in Las Vegas, Toronto, and Hamburg. So, while some say Apple is being held to a higher or different standard here, it’s not by anyone other than Apple themselves. • Samsung re-Fold, iPhone 11 Smart Frame, Facebook's $5b Fine, iOS Migration

    26/07/2019 Duration: 12min

It’s Friday and once again I’m taking three stories from around the web that are important but that either wouldn’t fill a full video or I just plain missed out on covering during the week. I’m planning on doing these more often going forward too, so if you have stories you want to see covered next week, just drop them in the comments or hit me up on Twitter. Then hit subscribe and dropkick that little bell dingus so you don’t miss them when they land. On deck for today are some privacy promising iOS migration updates, Facebook’s $5 billion fine, iPhone 11 photography, and the return of the Galaxy Fold. • Apple's 5G Future

    25/07/2019 Duration: 20min

There have been rumors of Apple working on their own cellular modems for years. Those are the radios that phones and other gear use to connect to carrier networks like AT&T, Verizon, Rogers, Vodafone, and all the rest. They’re mainly LTE right now but 5G is on the horizon and they’re already speccing out 6G beyond that. So, it’s a critical part of the hardware we all use every day and Apple likes to control all of those parts. The rumors picked up recently when Apple settled with Qualcomm, the biggest modem maker in the game, and Intel, who’d been providing Apple with modems during the spat, announced they’d be getting out of the business now that the other two had made up. But that left Intel’s modem portfolio up for grabs. And, much like Apple once bought PA Semi, licensed ARM’s IP, and began making custom A-Series chipsets for iPhones and iPads, the rumor here is that Apple will buy that modem business, license Qualcomm IP, and begin making custom modems as well. To help me sort the facts from the wish

  • Apple Watch ECG App — 6 Months Later

    22/07/2019 Duration: 10min

Back in September for 2018 — and wow but does that already seem like a technology lifetime ago! — Apple’s chief operating officer and head of Watch and Health products — took to the stage at the companies annual September event to announce Apple Watch Series 4 and its bold new edge-to-edge display. But he also announced something else: Irregular heartbeat notifications and, for the first time ever in a direct-to-consumer device, the ability to take an electrocardiogram. In a watch. On your freaking wrist. It shipped in the U.S. on December 6. It shipped in much of the E.U. and in Hong Kong on March 27. And today, it’s shipping in Canada. But, as always, there’s a lot more to this story. • iPadOS Safari: Desktop-Class Browsing is Here!

    18/07/2019 Duration: 17min

Our long, browser nightmare is over. Google web apps like GSuite now work as expected in Safari. So do Square Space and Wordpress. It’s a modern mobile miracle. But it’s also more than that: A download manager, a ton of keyboard shortcuts with modifiers, the ability to save and open tab sets, per site settings, text size controls, the whole WebKiit and caboodle. Apple is calling it Desktop Class Safari for iPad. The full-on web finally optimized for iPad or the iPad finally fully optimized for the web. And it’s coming with iPadOS this fall and, a fair amount of it, with iOS 13 for iPhone as well. • iPadOS Files & USB Drive Preview

    11/07/2019 Duration: 13min

With iPadOS — and, yes, an iPhone and even an iPod touch running iOS 13 — you can finally access external files, not just photos, not just videos, but honest-to-unix external documents, assets, and anything else, just by plugging in a USB drive, stick, even SD or Compact Flash card. You can even open photos and video directly in editing apps and access SMB shares right in the Files app. With some caveats, limitations, and, of course, adapters. • Why Apple Killed the 12-inch MacBook — Air and Pro Updated

    09/07/2019 Duration: 07min

The 12-inch MacBook is dead. So is the quote unquote “MacBook Escape”. In place of the MacBook is now just the MacBook Air, newly updated with a True Tone display. In place of the Escape is Touch Bars, Touch ID, and T2 chips all the way down. But does that make things simpler or even more complicated? • Jony Ive Drama Explained

    08/07/2019 Duration: 27min

A week ago, the Wall Street Journal published an article that alleged a high level of disfunction in Apple’s design department, from Tim Cook’s relationship with Jony Ive, to how Jony Ive ran — or didn’t run — the design organization, and how all of that led to Jony’s departure. The following evening, Tim Cook emailed CNBC to call the story absurd, distorted, and not recognizable as the company it claimed to describe. And, ever since, we’ve seen so many tea quotes, hot takes, sides taken, and… SPONSOR: Simple Contacts: Get $20 off your first Simple Contacts order just by going to simplecontacts.com/vector or entering VECTOR20 at checkout. • Is Apple Killing the Butterfly Keyboards on MacBooks?

    05/07/2019 Duration: 08min

Kuo Ming-Chi, supply chain exfiltrator extraordinaire, in a report issued earlier today. Text via MacRumors: "There have been successful developments in the new scissor keyboard. The new keyboard could improve the typing experience by offering longer key travel and durability by adopting glass fiber to reinforce the keys' structure." This, allegedly, for a 2019 MacBook Air update. If you’re not up on your keyboard nomenclature, then scissor switches are the fairly standard mechanisms Apple used to use across their laptop lineups. At least prior to 2015 when they introduced their own, invented-at-Apple butterfly switches to the newly redesigned 12-inch MacBook, and then in 2016 with the new MacBook Pro and 2018 with the new MacBook Air. I will explain. No, no, there is too much. Phil Schiller will sum up. SPONSOR: Brilliant Go to http://brilliant.org/vector and 20% off their annual Premium subscription! • Everything REALLY Wrong With Lightning Cables

    03/07/2019 Duration: 16min

I’ve been meaning to do a video about Apple’s Lightning port for a while now. The story is super interesting but other stuff kept coming up. Then, just this morning, I watched a video Tech Insider put up and… Yeah. Now, I’m fully behind Apple moving to USB-C on the iPhone. I would have loved for it to have happened with the iPhone X, even recognizing that’s super easy to say as someone not responsible for, you know, actually running the product. But, I also think the video left out a lot of what really should have been put in. So, let's do that now! • Why Everyone is Wrong About Jony Ive and Design at Apple

    02/07/2019 Duration: 28min

There have been a lot of... questionable takes surrounding the news of Jony Ive leaving Apple, what caused it, how it happened, and what it means for Apple's design culture going forward. Rather than perpetuate another one of my own, I decided to find someone super smart and super talented who was actually there. Who worked on prototyping and design at Apple going back to the days of Steve Jobs and the original iPhone, and who understands how and why the design culture works the way it does. Then, set up an interview even if that person is away on her vacation in France, so she can share her experience and insight. Now, Skype did not cooperate at all, so apologies for the bad video but what she has to say is so terrific I simply have to share it with you no matter what. Thanks for your understanding. • Why Jony Ive is Leaving Apple

    28/06/2019 Duration: 10min

Cupertino, California — Apple today announced that Sir Jony Ive, Apple’s chief design officer, will depart the company as an employee later this year to form an independent design company which will count Apple among its primary clients. While he pursues personal projects, Ive in his new company will continue to work closely and on a range of projects with Apple. Wow, I mean. On one hand, I’m devastated. As someone who started out in the business as a designer, Jony Ive and his relationship with Apple was just everything I looked up to and aspired to be. On the other hand, though, as someone no longer in design, Jony Ive set free but still connected to Apple is something I really, deeply feel. But, sorry, first. I wasn’t going to do this video today. I was going to wait and think on it a bit, and do a deeper, more forward looking video tomorrow. But then, you guessed it, the Internet happened. Hot takes began raining down like meteors in a Michael Bay movie. And, as expected a lot of them were just terrible.

  • The Ultimate iPhone (2019)

    26/06/2019 Duration: 13min

I’ve been wanting to do a video about what my dream iPhone would be for a while now. You know, if I got to be or work with Jony or Phil Schiller, or Joz for a cycle and do everything I’ve always wanted to do with and for the iPhone. Now, I’ve done videos before about this and that hardware feature I’d like to see Apple grab from other manufacturers and bring over to the iPhone, and MKBHD just did a video on what his dream phone in general would be cobbled together from all the different manufacturers. But, for this, I kinda want to do the opposite. Instead of looking out or going out, I want to turn in. I want to try to come up with what I think would be the ultimate expression of the iPhone by Apple. And hey, if you like the idea and want to see me try and do the same with Samsung’s Galaxy, Google’s Pixel, Huawei’s P-series, or any other phone, let me know in the comments.
