Take Aurally

It was great to display Take Aurally at UMEC 2018.  This is the Undergraduate Medical Education Conference at NUH NHS Trust and showcases the best of medical education going on.  We were able to record a conference special with attendees and presenters at UMEC. Dr Craig Douglas came down to the NUH DREEAM booth to discuss Aortic Dissection, who gets it, why they get it, how they present and what we can do about it. We'll discuss 'Chest Pain + 1', what bedside investigations we can do that will make us suspicious of aortic dissection and then we'll have a look at the future and the ADvISED trial. Slight later than planned straight from the NUH DREEAM mixing desk comes our latest podcast! This session is a live recording of our fourth #UnblindingResearch session on 'Types of trial'. We cover Longitudinal studies, what a cohort is, the difference between observational and interventional studies and also have a look at designing a randomised control trial by looking at sweets. This session from NUH DREEAM covers research ethics, what they are and why they are so important. We start by looking at some infamous cases of poor research ethics and what they can teach us. We look at 'a tale of two cities' - Nuremberg 1947 and Helsinki 1964 before then discussing Good Clinical Practice and how we can get ethical approval from the Health Research Authority. This episode is a live recording of the second session of #UnblindingResearch held in NUH DREEAM 21st March 2018. Research. THE search. WE search. And...fee search?! This episode covers that moment of inspiration as you embark on research. We cover PICO and how that helps us with our literature search, to formulate a question and how that will begin to shape our methodology. There's even a bit of a history lesson as we discuss Dr James Lind and his work on scurvy in 1747 (because we love a bit of medical history at Take Aurally). This episode is a live recording of the first session of #UnblindingResearch held in NUH DREEAM 21st February 2018 presented by Jamie Thomas and Claudia Washbrook. The clinical research approach is briefly covered, discussing literature searches and how primary outcomes might affect the methodology as well as what secondary outcomes are. Audit is discussed with emphasis on the cyclical approach. Finally Quality Improvement Projects are covered, how they are linked to audit, the PDSA format (Plan, Do, Study, Act) and how it can be embedded across healthcare. Psychiatry and Mental Health issues are important considerations in Emergency Medicine and part of the Clinical Phase 2 curriculum at the University of Nottingham. Therefore we were delighted when Dr James Ellison, Consultant Psychiatrist with a special interest in Substance Misuse joined the pod in DREEAM to record with us. This first podcast looks at a general approach to patients with a Psychiatric condition with focus on patients with: Depression Psychosis Personality Disorder As well as useful advice on talking to patient with these conditions James gives a nice oversight of an approach to mental health in general. This brilliant new collaboration between our education and research teams at NUH DREEAM is creating a new curriculum aimed at demystifying research and making it accessible for everyone! These sessions will be held on the third Wednesday of every month and are open to anyone who wants to come down to NUH DREEAM.
