Episodes

  • Episode 280: The 7 Habits of a Successful Pediatric Practice

    22/01/2019 Duration: 29min

What makes a successful pediatric chiropractic practice? Dr. Rubin celebrates his 30th anniversary in chiropractic this year, and was asked to speak at Life Vision Raw, so he distilled all those years of effort into 7 timeless principles. Listen on..

  • Episode 279: Are you a flip phone in an iPhone world?

    17/01/2019 Duration: 14min

Are you a flip phone or an iPhone? Are you keeping up with the times, studying the latest research, constantly learning new things, while brushing up on the fundamentals? Do you remember what it was like to simply text someone on a flip phone? How many steps it took just to create a short message? Yes it was mind blowing at the time, but now with the iPhone, you can literally use Siri to just say the message and it types itself. We do best when we adapt and change and grow with the times.

  • Episode 278: Picasso & Chiropractic

    15/01/2019 Duration: 10min

Picasso was an incredible artist in the 20th century, most famous for bringing cubism into the world of modern art. His major contribution was showing multiple perspectives in the same work of art, which is vital in understanding how to take care of kids in a pediatric chiropractic practice. Kids (and adults too) will often come in with a complaint or issue that the parent has identified, but it is your job as a neuro- detective to come up with what is REALLY going on with the child. The child is NOT the diagnosis. Often we see manifestations of a weakened nerve system that are classified as something, but in reality is the expression of a brain and nerve system gone wrong.

  • Episode 277: The Crooked Face Epidemic

    11/01/2019 Duration: 18min

Have you ever noticed how many smiles are crooked these days? Or how many children have eyes that are not working together? Dr. Rubin began noticing this trend years ago when he started working with kids on the spectrum and with infants with developmental issues, but never heard it put so concisely as he did when he heard about the new book, Crooked, by Forrest Maready. To add to Mr. Maready's work, Dr. Rubin suggests that the environment and epigenetics can be added to the list of causative factors. Fascinating stuff...listen on!

  • Episode 276: Dyslexia, Learning Disorders, and Chiropractic

    08/01/2019 Duration: 13min

Learning disorders now affect approximately 10% of our young kids today, which equates to about 1 in 5 children in the US. Today there is more help and advocacy than ever before for these children, but one potentially important piece that is not often accomplished is early intervention. It is challenging to assess an actual learning disorder until the child is old enough for preschool, however there may be signs earlier on, pointing us to weaknesses that can strengthened before they are in preschool.

  • Episode 275: Green Books...why they should be read and re-read

    03/01/2019 Duration: 14min

Green book? What's a Green book? It is a series of 39 volumes written mostly by BJ Palmer from about 1910 to 1961, containing the essence of chiropractic philosophy. If you haven't read Green Books, then you haven't really felt the passion and urgency of the BJ Palmer chiropractic philosophy. Where to start? The Bigness of the Fellow Within!

  • Episode 274: "Think & Grow Rich"

    31/12/2018 Duration: 13min

"Think & Grow Rich" is one of the most influential books I have ever read. Written by Napoleon Hill in 1937, it is as applicable today as it was when I first read it in 1993. Hill would say that the combination of written down goals and a burning desire to achieve them makes you almost unstoppable. Get busy writing 2019 goals!

  • Episode 273: Dr. Fred Barge- His thoughts and wisdom

    26/12/2018 Duration: 16min

How many of you have read the book, "Are You The Doctor, Doctor?" Dr. Fred Barge was an icon but his legacy lives on with his books and the spirit of chiropractic that he embodied. Another great book of his is: "Life Without Fear." These both should be required reading in chiropractic school, along with BJ Palmer's "Bigness of the Fellow Within" and "The Glory of Going On" and Dr. Sid Williams, "Lasting Purpose." This IS now the correct Fred Barge podcast. The 1st download yesterday was incorrect. Thanks and sorry about the confusion!

  • Episode 272: How does Margaritaville & Chiropractic Fit Together?

    21/12/2018 Duration: 13min

How does Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville and chiropractic fit together? They both started with an idea and then built an empire around it. BJ Palmer could have kept chiropractic a family secret like his dad wanted, but he knew it was bigger than the 2 of them. Jimmy Buffett has taken 1 hit song and knew he could make something more out of it, and is one of the top grossing recording artists of today! Not because he has more hit records, but because he knows how to market himself. We can take a lesson from that! Happy Holidays!

  • Episode 271: Milestones are called Milestones for a Reason!

    18/12/2018 Duration: 16min

Milestones are not called mile suggestions. When you are on a jogging trail and you pass by a mile marker, it doesn't say "somewhere between 3/4 of a mile and 1 mile." The mile marker is very specifically at the 1 mile mark. Same thing with milestones. They are the way the infant and toddlers' brain literally turns on or boots up. Sure there are variations, especially with preemies, but for the most part, certain things should happen within very certain times or else concern should be raised.

  • Episode 270: "What to do about your Brain Injured Child"

    13/12/2018 Duration: 10min

Glenn Doman wrote the book, "What to do about your Brain Injured Child" over 30 years ago but it is still a classic. Anybody who either has a child with disabilities or has a child who has sustained a brain injury should read this. It talks about roadblock injuries, the place in the brain where the child cannot get past. Doman mentions the 'workplace' of a child with brain challenges should be the floor and not a chair or carseat.

  • Episode 269: The 6 Types of Concussions

    11/12/2018 Duration: 10min

Recently I was asked to speak about concussions to a large group of chiropractors, and 2 of the most important topics in that 4 hour class were: there are 6 types of concussion, and their are some very interesting risk factors for certain people who will have a more challenging time healing from concussions. Many of the risk factors truly make sense once you understand the 6 types of concussion.

  • Episode 268: Your Profound Reason Why

    06/12/2018 Duration: 17min

Do you explain why you do what you do? Your job is not simply to adjust mechanically, but to transfer a feeling from you to them about how amazing their body (or their kids body is) and how you want to reconnect them. Our patients come to us in varying degress of 'disconnectedness' and our mission is to change that.

  • Episode 267: Manual Therapy in Children

    04/12/2018 Duration: 17min

Dr. Jeanne Ohm is one of my heroes and mentors in chiropractic today, as she is to thousands of other pediatric and family based DC's. Years ago she introduced me to the book Manual Therapy in Children by Dr. Heiner Biedermann, an Osteopath from Germany. It is an incredible read and shines with incredible quotes that are so chiro-centric even though Dr. Beidermann was more traditionally trained. Check this out!

  • Episode 266: Default Brain Mode

    29/11/2018 Duration: 19min

The default brain mode concept comes from one of the most interesting papers I have read recently. It describes how neuroscientists found an area of the brain that turns on when you are in a resting state (the default mode) and turns off during focused activity. Further research has shown that in children with Autism and ADHD that this default mode doesn't turn on and off correctly. Is it possible that our modern technology has caused our brains to be more distracted (the default mode), with the constant buzzing, beeping and chirping of our phones, telling us to "look at me" because it just received a text, tweet or Facebook post? What mode are you mostly in? Default or focused?

  • Episode 265: Common medications used by pediatric patients

    26/11/2018 Duration: 11min

It is important to understand the variety of prescription and non-prescription medications used by kids today so that we can know what they are coming in with. Do you know the most commonly prescribed meds? Know what they are for? This is an introduction into what they are taking and why.

  • Episode 264: Keeping on top of the research

    21/11/2018 Duration: 08min

Things have changed so much since Dr Rubin started in practice almost 30 years ago. The number one reason to see a child in 1989 was...ear infections! Now, even though that is still high on the list, the number one reason is neurodevelopmental or neurobehavioral disorders. Dr. Rubin explains the rise in challenges like Lyme Disease, depression, and anxiety, in context of why it is so important to keep on learning and researching.

  • Episode 263: Subluxation Deniers?

    19/11/2018 Duration: 24min

Yes, you read that right. There is an organization called subluxation deniers, whose entire mission is to discredit individuals, schools and organizations that stand by the word subluxation. For those of you who are not chiropractors or chiropractic patients, a subluxation is the main reason why there is a chiropractic profession to begin with...it occurs when the brain and the nervous system are effected by some sort of malposition, irritiation or inflammation. To deny the subluxation is to deny the very essence of what chiropractic is!

  • Episode 262: Modernized Chiropractic

    15/11/2018 Duration: 13min

DD Palmer did not write the first chiropractic textbook...it was actually written by 3 former students of DD Palmer: Smith, Paxson and Langworthy. Today we present what 21st Century Modernized Chiropractic could be, based on 3 facts: The blending of science, art and philosophy, unifying the profession the way the dentists did by creating very specific sub-disciplines, and "staying on our side of the highway."

  • Episode 261: Pioneers, philosophy and neurology

    13/11/2018 Duration: 18min

There are 3 kinds of people, according to BJ Palmer: Pioneers, plodders and parasites. Chiropractors can be pioneers if we stick to the philosophy while we deliver our amazing product... chiropractic adjustments. There are so many who say that the philosophy and science don't mix, but nothing can be further from accurate. Philosophy and science should mix to ensure that we are educating our patients from a different place than the pain management direction that our profession is so stuck in.
