Budaya dan nilai tradisional berperan penting dalam melestarikan keanekaragaman hayati dan bentang alam. Hal ini tercermin dari kegiatan perlindungan daerah aliran sungai (DAS) dan hutan di sepanjang Sungai Kapuas, Kalimantan Barat. Masyarakat Adat Desa Keluin, Mensiau, dan Labian memiliki keterikatan dengan bentang alam tempat mereka tinggal dan bekerja. Bagi mereka, hutan merupakan sumber pangan, air bersih, tanaman obat, kayu dan serat, dan merupakan habitat penting bagi satwa liar. Masyarakat memiliki sejarah panjang dengan pohon tengkawang – spesies tanaman endemik Kapuas. Mereka memahami betul arti penting dan fungsi dari jenis ini dalam mencegah erosi dan melindungi alam. Akar tengkawang mampu mengikat kuat tanah dan produktif dalam menghasilkan buah. Pohon ini juga menghasilkan minyak dan terkenal dengan kayunya yang tahan lama. In Indonesia, the role-playing game COmMoDO – short for COMpanion MOdelling in InDOnesia was created by Dr. Nur Hasanah for her PhD– depicts a landscape in East Kalimantan with a mosaic of forests, oil palm plantations and rice fields along a river. It aims to increase understanding around the factors that influence local communities’ decisions on their land and livelihoods, in particular labor allocation, financial capital, as well as socio-economic backgrounds and perceptions around ecosystem services. The game has also provided insights on how local communities interact among themselves and with oil palm companies, and how these interactions also influence decisions on their livelihoods.
