Treat Yourself Holiday Gorging Triple Scoop
03/11/2019 Duration: 03minDo you like Department 12 but wish it was, you know, a little less boring? Then check out The I/O Soapbox, a YouTube video series that talks about I/O stuff in entertaining and clever ways. (You know, if you're into that sort of thing.) Can gathering the predictions of other researchers, policy-makers, and ordinary people improve social science research? Stefano DellaVigna, Devin Pope, and Eva Vivalt think so, and they've published an article in Science to make their case. If you think it's a good idea, you can sign up to become a predictor on the Social Science Prediction Platform. Finally, if you use Chrome, check out the Google Scholar Button. It lets you look up scholarly references--and download full-text PDFs--as you browse the web. Also, it's free.

Stefanie Mockler on Coaching
10/10/2019 Duration: 16minA warm welcome to Stefanie Mockler, a doctoral candidate at DePaul University. Stefanie is a leadership consultant, executive coach, and Head of Insights at Vantage Leadership Consulting. She's also the founder and owner at The Female Leader's Edge, where she coaches women leaders to overcome organizational barriers and reach their goals. What is coaching and how is it different from other interventions? Is it about asking questions or giving advice? Is it regulated? What kinds of problems or goals do clients bring to coaching? Is an IO psych program good preparation for a coaching career? I interrogate Stefanie with all these questions, and more! You can reach Stefanie on LinkedIn, Twitter, and Instagram. (In this episode I mention that this is the first discussion of coaching on the show. Uh, no, that would be this excellent episode with Alok Sawhney.)

And he still found time to talk to us. He's been asking the IO world for advice on graduate school and, in this episode, he shares the cream of the crop with us. He also shares his own advice for getting into the grad school of your choice. After you listen, be sure to connect with James on LinkedIn and check out his brand new podcast, The Abnormal Way, with Shamit Y. Patel.

How to Get Access to Research Outside of Academia
06/09/2019 Duration: 04minLooking for something? Some journal articles, maybe? A pre-print or two? Don't be shy. Come closer. I'll hook you up. Let's start by checking in with your alma mater. They've gotten enough of your money and blood. The least they can do is offer alumni access to their academic databases. If they turn you away, see if you can get a library membership at another local local public college or university. Your local lending library is worth a try, too. No luck? Try Google Scholar, ResearchGate, Academia.edu, or PsyArXiv. But whatever you do, stay away from those cats at Sci-Hub. They're baaaad news, dig? Check out the Department 12 Podcast, blog, and newsletter at www.department12.com. And for even more IO geekery, follow me on LinkedIn. (It's just like Facebook, except that people try to sell you consulting instead of essential oils.)
