Radio Joe attended the 1.5 day Workshop on the Health Risks of Indoor Exposure to Particulate Matter at the The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine. The workshop was a who's who of indoor air quality researchers, regulators, stakeholders, industry leaders and others. It was held at the National Academies building in DC and was sponsored by EPA. Over 400 people watched the webinar live and learned more than they ever thought was possible about particulate matter, indoor air quality and health effets. Radio Joe will summarize the key points from 1.5 day program in a one hour program today. The ASHRAE and IAQA Conferences and the AHR Expo were this week in Orlando, FL. Due to technical issues and weather related travel problems the live show from the IAQA Conference had to be cancelled, BUT that gives us the opportunity to welcome ASHRAE President David Underwood, IAQA President Kent Rawhouser and IAQA Executive Director Stephanie Sears to discuss the conference, the consolidation and the future of the organizations today on IAQ Radio. Two of the most important disaster restoration industry standards are the IICRC S520 Professional Mold Remediation Standard and Reference Guide and the S500 Professional Water Damage Restoration Standard and Reference Guide. Both documents were recently revised and this week we are going to discuss the revisions with the S520 Consensus Body Chairman Jim Pearson. Max Sherman is a Senior Scientist at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory with over 30 years of experience in building physics. He has a Ph.D. in Physics from Berkeley and is an international expert in air leakage, HVAC, indoor air quality, infiltration, moisture, energy efficiency, and related topics. He is a well-regarded member of ASHRAE having served on the Board of Directors and many technical positions and is currently a Distinguished Lecturer; he is a recipient of ASHRAE's Exceptional Service Award and ASHRAE's highest technical award as a Holladay Distinguished Fellow. He has also been elected a Fellow of the International Society of Indoor Air Quality and Climate (ISIAQ). A hot topic in the research community is the microbiome of the built environment. This week on IAQ Radio we welcome one of the leading researchers in this area Dr. Jordan Peccia. Dr. Peccia is an Associate Professor of environmental engineering at Yale University, the director of Yale environmental engineering's undergraduate studies, and the faculty advisor for Yale Engineers Without Borders. He is an associate editor for the journal Indoor Air, and is the 2014-15 chair of the Indoor Aerosols and Aerosol Exposure working group for the American Association for Aerosol Research. We talk a lot about doing construction when there are existing IAQ or disaster related damage but we have not discussed in detail what type of control should occur on every day remodeling projects. This week on IAQ Radio we welcome Kevin Kennedy, Luke Gard and Eric Shapiro. Listeners know Kevin from his prior interviews with us but this time he has one of his top lieutenants joining him along with a friend and colleague of all of ours Mr. Eric Shapiro. For the past few years Luke and Eric have been running the live research we have been performing at our annual conference for IAQ Training Institute, LLC. We set up very similar hotel rooms for a simulated remediation. We set up the rooms in ways that are common in the IEQ world one was negatively pressurized, one was set up just scrubbing the air with a HEPA filtered AFD and one was set up doing both negative pressure and scrubbing.
