  • Adult Education Matters Interview Part 1

    14/04/2018 Duration: 13min

An interview with Principal Giuliana Brahim of Milpitas Adult Education. First, you will hear a simple, 10 question interview twice: once with single words answers, and the second time Principal Giuliana answers the questions in complete sentences. Although the vocabulary and grammar become more difficult, it is important to note that both the short and long answers provide complete information. Remember: the USCIS officer wants the truth and needs complete information. Then, Principal Giuliana talks about how her life as an immigrant from Peru has informed her profession as an adult educator and administrator. Giuliana describes culture shock when she came to the US and the pain of "casual" racism that she felt when her fellow country men confused her ethnic identity and neglected to acknowledge her cultural heritage.  This led to the heightened awareness and appreciation for the cultural diversity of parents and children in the Milpitas Unified School District. • A U.S. Citizenship Quiz for Easter

    01/04/2018 Duration: 07min

Today's quiz pairs ten citizenship questions with ten American Christians from the western Catholic and Protestant traditions: Bartolomé de las Casas Sojourner Truth Aimee Semple McPherson Dorothy Day and Peter Maurin Bishop Fulton Sheen Mother Angelica Billy Graham Huston Smith Watchman Nee This quiz is a follow up to last year's quiz about American Christians from the Eastern Orthodox traditions. Later, dig deeper into the lives of these saints. For example, Bartolome de las Casas was once a slave owner himself, but changed. His failed mission in Puerto Rico compelled him to take holy orders as a Dominican friar. This change eventually led to his new job as the Bishop of Chiapas, Mexico where used his power to fight for civil rights. Reading his works today, it would be easy to imagine what he would say about the Black Lives Matter movement, Puerto Rico's economic woes, or the incresed militarization of U.S.-Mexico border. Happy African-American History Month! During the month of February, US Citizenship Podcast explores the connection between the African American History and the USCIS Citizenship Interview. Our first interview is a re-edit of a Citizenship interview with Krestos Negasi (Addis Ababa, Ethiopia) 2013 pdf: http://goo.gl/roUigH   2016 mp3: http://traffic.libsyn.com/uscitizenpod/mlk-day-citizenship-interview.mp3  This mock Citizenship interview was inspired by “Holding the Bag," a high beginning ESL novel about an Ethiopian-American cab driver in Washington DC. After the interview, I will talk a little bit more about "Holding the Bag" and our resources for African American History Month. A bit more about "Holding the Bag" Negasi is a Washington DC taxi driver from Ethiopia who has been in the U.S. for many years and has a family. • USCIS and the Government Shutdown

    20/01/2018 Duration: 05min

In this episode, we talk about USCIS, the Government shutdown, and how to contact your federal government representatives. The Government Shutdown does not affect Citizenship services. The USCIS will continue to process USCIS Form N-400 Applications for Naturalization and interview applicants for U.S. Citizenship. However, several USCIS programs will either expire or suspend operations, or be otherwise affected, until they receive appropriated funds or are reauthorized by Congress. These include: 1. EB-5 Immigrant Investor Regional Center Program. The EB-5 visa allows eligible Immigrant Investors to become lawful permanent residents by investing at least $1,000,000 to finance a business in the United States that will employ at least 10 American workers 2. • The USCIS N-400 and Fee Waivers

    13/01/2018 Duration: 04min

Recently I have received several questions about the new N-400 Online application and fee waivers. Question: Can I apply for citizenship online (N-400) with fee waiver (I-912) or fee reduction (I-942)? Answer: At this time, you cannot apply for citizenship online if you are using with fee waiver (I-912) or fee reduction (I-942) form. If you want to apply for citizenship (N-400) with fee waiver (I-912) or fee reduction (I-942) form, you must download these forms from USCIS.gov and mail these forms together to USCIS. USCIS has advice about how to find low-cost legal services. Check the show notes for links for the forms and legal services. However, the question about fee waivers reminded me about an interview that I did last year with Citizenship Teacher, Kathy Martin from Beaumont Adult School. She gave a very clear explanation about the difference between fee waivers and fee reduction. In honor of the resolution: NEW YEAR, NEW CITIZEN, I would like to play a short clip from that interview. USCIS N-400 Applica
