Love isn't just something you have in your heart. It isn't just some feeling that arises when you see someone (or something) you desire. Love is a verb. It requires action. What actions? Paul, in his letter to the Corinthian church, gives us the most comprehensive definition of love in all of scripture. The interesting thing is that, in doing so, he lists 2 examples of what love is and focuses far more on what love isn't. In his description of love, Paul uses 8 words to describe what love isn't - he only uses 2 words to describe what it is: Patient and kind. There are many words for love in the Greek language. The most powerful is the word "agape." This is the word that is most often used when describing the love that God has for us. This is also the type of love we are called to have for each other. So what does this mean? First and foremost, it means choosing to love all those around us, including the ones that we maybe don't like all that much. This week we look at Jesus' sermon to the church of Thyatira - a church that is dealing with a problem that has been so commonplace in the church throughout history - the problem of idolatry. While idolatry may look different today, it still exists. So, what do we do about it?

The church in Pergamum had a problem - they were going against God's commands to not eat food sacrificed to idols. I mean, after all, whats the big deal? It's not like they believed in the idols that the meat was sacrificed to. The problem is that they were sacrificing their holiness for their longings. They were sacrificing God's desires for their own. Something we do all. the. time. So what are the consequences? What's God's recommended treatment? Listen to the sermon to find out!

What do the sermons from Jesus to the seven churches in Revelation have to do with our churches today? The church in Ephesus was so focused on getting things right that they forgot how to love - Jesus is there to remind us that no matter how orthodox you are, if you're doing it without love it means nothing.

Psalm 23 is far and away the most popular psalm of the bunch. So popular that it has made its way into pop culture - from Bach to Tupac. But have we gotten so familiar with the psalm that we have forgotten what it means?

Do you ever feel like an imposter while in church? It's tough to sing songs of praise when there isn't much going on in your life that is praise-worthy. But maybe we need to readjust our definition of praise-worthy. Even though God gladly hears our laments, frustrations, and confessions - there is always a reason to praise God for what he has done, what he is doing, and what he will do.

In Psalm 37 David, speaking out of personal experience, reminds us that one of the greatest tools against fear is wisdom. God is the ultimate source of wisdom and we need him to overcome whatever comes into our lives.

We all have enemies - whether they're people we don't know that well, people who are close to us, or even ourselves being our own worst enemy. So, what do we do about it? How do we interact with our enemies? Lucky for us, David knew a thing or two about having enemies and his prayer in Psalm 3 can be helpful guidance for us.

What do we do when God is silent? This is what the Psalmist is trying to figure out in this psalm. As he's surrounded by enemies that want the worst for him and the one he always trusted to be there seemed to go missing. Now what? The psalmist seems to do three things: 1. He laments - he brings his frustrations and fears to God. 2. He gathers with his worshiping community - even when he may not feel like worshiping. 3. He places his hope in the future - he knows the silence won't last forever and trusts in the promise that one day will be better than today. Who is deserving of God's grace? Certainly not Nineveh. Was Jonah? Jonah was so filled with hate for the Ninevites he failed to see how he often could be just like them. So often in our lives we want justice for our enemies and grace for ourselves, but we have a God who freely offers grace to all - and thank God he does.
