Counting down our Great Awakening theme. After “Time to pray” and “Time to wash up,” it’s “Time to eat right.” Our diet is fundamentally important to our wellbeing. “We are what we eat.” The same is true spiritually for us. “Would Luther be a Lutheran today?” This is the question we look at in finishing our Sola Series. The jury seems out, but Luther himself left some guidelines about how we might answer this. [Organ - Pentecost 20]

Two great Lutheran musicians, Bach and Handel, both wrote on the bottom of their compositions "SDG", standing for "Soli Deo Gloria", Latin that means To God Alone the Glory. This is one of the great understandings that emerged from the Reformation: we sinners can do nothing to earn a restored relationship with God. God, in his grace, has done everything. The fourth in our Sola Series, Solus Christus (Christ Alone). “Luther recovered for the church from the Bible the centrality of the person and work of Christ in redemption.” [Organ - Pentecost 18]

The third in our Sola Series: Sola Gratia (Grace Alone). This is the source of all that God gives to us. “By grace…” (Ephesians 2:8). It is His forgiveness, His favour, His presence. “When we don’t get what we deserve, it’s a real good thing. When we get what we don’t deserve, its’s a real good thing.” (Newsboys).
