134: A journey through addiction and recovery and how one man pays it forward
19/06/2015 Duration: 46minToday’s guest is Omar Pinto. Omar has been in recovery for eleven years now. But before recovery, he spent 4 years in denial about being a drug addict. His drugs of choice were predominantly alcohol and cocaine but he’d settle for pot, ecstasy, mushrooms or whatever was at the party. During those 4 years, he lost his business, his friends and business partners disowned him, and his wife left him. Omar’s health was very poor and he was even exhibiting severe symptoms of schizophrenia and paranoia. It wasn’t until his daughter was born and he held her in his arms for the first time that he truly surrendered and accepted that alone he could not win the battle against drugs and alcohol. In that moment, he experienced his first spiritual awakening and asked the God of his understanding to relieve him of his drug addiction, if only for the sake of his daughter. Born in 1956, and raised on the outskirts of San Diego, California, Robert survived a traumatic childhood, traveled extensively as a young man, and lived a variety of lives as a ski bum, a martial artist, a factory welder, a monumental sculpture fabricator, an underground cartoonist; and finally as an award-winning illustrator, art director, and animation designer. His journeys – from the Mayan underground, to remote South Pacific islands, to the capitals of Europe, to the deserts of Arizona and the canyons of New York City – were punctuated by three dramatic, distinctly different "Near Death Experiences."
