OMF - Sandi Schussel, 76, T-cell lymphoma, Lynn with Dr. Matthew Davids, Associate Director, Center for Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia Physician, Dana-Farber 8-22-18
22/08/2018 Duration: 09minIn January 2015, Sandi became very ill and was seen by multiple doctors. In late March, Sandi felt that her lymph nodes had enlarged. On March 25, she went into the hospital where she underwent biopsy and began treatment with Dr. Davids for lymphoma.Sandi was treated with chemotherapy via a protocol named CHOP. She achieved complete remission by July 2015 and since that time there has been no evidence of cancer or lymphoma. As of May 2018, she is no longer undergoing treatment.Dr. Davids told Sandi early on that he was going to “cure” her. Sandi appreciated his optimism, knowing full well that the odds were stacked against her. Dr. Davids' confidence gave Sandi hope and was always foremost in her mind.Fighting this disease has emphasized to Sandi how important a “team” approach is. In addition to the Dana-Farber medical team, Sandi had a home team. Most importantly, Sandi's husband George managed the appointments, communication, transportation, emotional support, and food, in addition to her medical needs.San

OMF - Breslyn Clinton, 6, tumor, Newton with her father, Dave, and sister, Cheyanne 8-22-18
22/08/2018 Duration: 05minBreslyn met OMF when they visited the Jimmy Fund Clinic in May.She had an MRI because of persistent headaches. During the MRI, doctors found a tumor and rushed her to the emergency room.In 2017, Breslyn had brain surgery and now is undergoing chemotherapy.Breslyn is an artist. She loves designing and sketching new clothes and shoes. She is also a great singer, although she is shy preforming in front of people. Breslyn also likes to swim and ride her scooter.She is in kindergarten.Breslyn loves doing art projects at the Jimmy Find Clinic. Some of her favorites have been slime making, rock painting, and creating stuffed animals. She really enjoys the special parties and events at the Clinic as well. She loved trick-or-treating with the other kids, and the yo-yo performer that came to visit the Clinic.Her family includes her parents, Dave and Kendra, and sisters, Cheyanne, 21, and Noelle, 11.Breslyn and Noelle will be saying “Play Ball” to start tonight’s game.

OMF - Rick Germani, 85, non-squamous non-small cell metastatic lung cancer, Providence, RI with Dr. Bruce Johnson, thoracic (lung cancer), Chief Clinical Research Officer, Dana-Farber 8-22-18
22/08/2018 Duration: 06minIn November 2017, Rick Germani made two visits an Urgent Care facility, where he was given two x-rays and diagnosed with pneumonia. When the antibiotics were not working, Rick returned and was given a CT scan. He was sent home without any results.Rick later received a call from his primary care physician who asked him and his wife, Gini, to visit his office. He informed Rick that his scan showed metastatic lung cancer in both of his lungs. Rick and his physician both agreed that he needed to be treated at Dana-Farber, as it is “one of the best cancer treatment organizations in the world.”Rick made appointments for a biopsy of the cancer. About a week after the biopsy was completed, he was taken to the emergency room at Cape Cod for breathing difficulties where it was determined that he had numerous pulmonary embolisms. He was then rushed by ambulance to a Boston hospital. His family was told that he probably would not survive.After 5 days of treatment to dissolve the clots, he was released from the hospital a

OMF - Samantha Dubois, 18, acute myeloid leukemia, Rindge, NH with her parents, Errick and Tammy, and brother, Garrett 8-22-18
22/08/2018 Duration: 04minSamantha had symptoms for more than 6 months varying from shortness of breath to fatigue, and infections. She finally went to the hospital and after a series of tests, Samantha learned that she had AML.Her treatment has included chemotherapy, radiation, and a bone marrow transplant from a 33-year-old male in Poland.Her diagnosis has had such a profound impact on her life that she has decided that she would like to pursue a career as a pediatric oncology nurse. She is a rising senior at St. Bernard's Central Catholic High School in Fitchburg.In Samantha's spare time she enjoys shopping, hanging out with friends, and helping with her former softball team, for which her father is the coach.

OMF - Paul O’Mara, 68, myelofibrosis, Worcester with Dr. Joseph Antin, Chief and Program Director, Stem Cell Transplantation, Dana-Farber 8-22-18
22/08/2018 Duration: 07minPaul, an avid jogger, began to get shortness of breath while working out. Soon after, he began to experience a full stomach shortly after starting to eat. After visiting his doctor, he was diagnosed with myelofibrosis.For his treatment, Paul has received a stem cell transplant and is now focusing on being reimmunized. He chose Dana-Farber for its world-class reputation for treating cancer.Paul’s experience at the Institute really took a turn in April 2017. He spent a month in the hospital and was then discharged to go home. He had to spend the next year in isolation, but unfortunately, three weeks later, his wife of 45 years, Norma, passed away suddenly.Paul was so grateful for his doctor’s and nurses’ support. He will never forget their kindness and love. They encouraged him to push himself and do things that he didn’t think he was capable of.Paul is now supported by his daughter, Kelley; son-in-law, Tony, and granddaughter, Taylor.In his free time, he loves to run, play golf, and work.Dr. Antin is Chief of

22/08/2018 Duration: 06minBetsy first began to feel pain in her hip and was dealing with some nausea, which she initially wrote off as a pulled muscle and GI issues, in 2016. But when the symptoms persisted, Betsy decided to see a doctor and was diagnosed with unclassified pleomorphic sarcoma (UPS) in November 2016 at 30 years old.As part of her treatment, Betsy has undergone radiation, chemotherapy, and surgery on her leg and lungs. She began her treatment at the end of 2016 with chemo and radiation. She then had two surgeries in 2017 but found recurrences in both her leg and lungs in December 2017. Betsy is now in chemotherapy with the goal of controlling her tumor growth.Betsy is supported by her fiancé, who she will be marrying this weekend, her brother, sister, and her parents. While she is currently on a leave of absence as she treats her disease, Betsy is a project manager at the Center for Sustainable Energy.Betsy loves to hike, kayak, or just be outside. 22/08/2018 Duration: 05minIn May 2014, after having pneumonia symptoms that wouldn’t go away, tests finally showed David had lung cancer.David's hobbies include cycling and playing softball.David is supported by his wife, a brother; a sister; 2 step-children, and a step-granddaughter.He works as a constable.David says of his cancer, "It was a very difficult time in my life, but now that I’ve had such great success with this drug trial, life is very good again. Dana-Farber has been very good to me, and especially Dr. Khanh Do and Andrew Wolanski NP. They are very special to me and my family."David was one of Dr. Do’s first patients at Dana-Farber. He is one of the EDDC success stories where the doctor and his team were able to match the right drug to the right patient at the right time.His tumor had a rare mutation that Dr. Do and his team were able to identify and match to a trial drug that was specifically being developed just for that mutation.The effects of the drug were almost immediate, and he was able to wean off oxygen in a few
