  • SyrupCast Podcast Ep. 194: Inside Huawei, Shenzhen’s darling

    08/04/2019 Duration: 49min

This week on the SyrupCast, MobileSyrup staff reporter Shruti Shekar, Financial Post telecom reporter Emily Jackson and Yahoo Finance reporter Alicja Siekierska, discuss their recent trip to Huawei's headquarters in Shenzhen, China. Huawei has been in the news a lot lately. The company is at the forefront of developing 5G infrastructure but has also garnered attention recently regarding its legal troubles. Whether it's the arrest of CFO Meng Wanzhou back in December of 2018, the charges the U.S. recently brought against Huawei, or the lawsuit the China-based tech giant launched against the U.S. in response, Huawei has been under a lot of scrutiny lately. Until recently, Huawei has also been a very private operation. The company rarely speaks to reporters and is generally reluctant to open its doors to the media. Now, in an attempt to regain the public's trust, Huawei invited four Canadian reporters -- Shruti, Emily, and Alicja being three of the four -- to Huawei's headquarters in Shenzhen, China. The questi

  • SyrupCast Podcast Ep. 192: What is spectrum and how is it used?

    22/03/2019 Duration: 29min

This week on the SyrupCast, MobileSyrup staff writer Shruti Shekar and Globe and Mail telecom report Christine Dobby ask the question, "what is spectrum and why is it important?" Last week, Canada began auctioning off the 600 MHz spectrum to twelve different players. This spectrum is low-frequency and capable of passing through buildings as well as travelling long distances. Shruti and Christine discuss how this will allow Canadian carriers to serve rural and urban areas of the country better, especially as 5G becomes available in Canada. • SyrupCast Podcast Ep. 190: Exploring new galaxies and getting lost at MWC

    08/03/2019 Duration: 33min

This week on the SyrupCast, MobileSyrup features editor Igor Bonifacic, managing editor Patrick O'Rourke, and staff writer Dean Daley discuss the latest and greatest in phones following Mobile World Congress and dig into Samsung's new Galaxy S10. Last week, Dean travelled to Barcelona for Mobile World Congress. What got everyone excited, including Dean, was all the foldable smartphone technology at the show this year. The (possibly) innovative phones feature a hefty price tag though, with Huawei's Mate X coming in at an outstanding $3,425 CAD. The Syrupcast team discusses how they feel foldable devices will fair in the long term, and whether the foldable displays will stand the test of time. Another major point of focus at this year's MWC was 5G phones. As countries around the world build out the infrastructure necessary for the next generation in wireless technology, companies are scrambling to release smartphones capable of handling 5G. Even though there were prototype devices on display at MWC, it's unlik

  • Viewer Experience Podcast Ep. 10: We didn't start the 'Fyre' Festival

    07/02/2019 Duration: 50min

While U.S.-based streaming giant Netflix's catalogue of original film still leaves quite a bit to be desired, there's respite in knowing that the over-the-top streaming platform's selection of original documentaries continue to impress. This week, MobileSyrup news and telecom reporter Sameer Chhabra and MobileSyrup managing editor Patrick O'Rourke discuss Netflix's Fyre: The Greatest Party that Never Happened, and share their opinions on the second major Fyre Festival documentary to debut on a U.S. streaming platform. Later on the show, Sameer speaks with Toronto-based online content creator Casie Stewart to talk about online influencing, while University of Toronto professor Megan Boler addresses Sameer's questions about the glorious dream of the internet and humanity' digital developments. In the interest of full disclosure, MobileSyrup recorded an original interview with Boler, and Sameer re-recorded the questions after the fact. This episode also marks Sameer's last appearance as the host of Viewer Experi

  • Viewer Experience Podcast Ep. 9: 'Black Mirror: Bandersnatch' wants to take away your choice

    03/01/2019 Duration: 45min

Black Mirror: Bandersnatch isn't just the latest episode of Charlie Brooker's acclaimed Black Mirror anthology series, it's also a visual novel that represents one of the most public Netflix experiments ever deployed. The film tells the story of a young programmer who finds himself in a strange reality loop while attempting to build a choose-your-own-adventure video game based on a fictional choose-your-own-adventure novel called Bandersnatch. This week, MobileSyrup reporter Sameer Chhabra speaks with MobileSyrup managing editor Patrick O'Rourke and staff reporter/video producer Shruti Shekar about Black Mirror: Bandersnatch. Later in the episode, Mike MacDonald, an author of the Choose Your Own Misery series of choose-your-own-adventure novels (and a former colleague of MobileSyrup's own Patrick O'Rourke), speaks about what it's like writing narratives that depend on continuous reader input. • SyrupCast Podcast Ep. 184: The Apple falls a little too far from the tree

    09/11/2018 Duration: 32min

This week on the SyrupCast, MobileSyrup managing editor Patrick O'Rourke takes over hosting duties and sits down with telecom reporter Sameer Chhabra and reporter Bradley Bennett to discuss Apple's big October hardware event. Completely the opposite of what Patrick predicted a few weeks ago, Apple revealed a new MacBook Air at the company's October 30th event in New York City. The device comes across as a bit of a Frankenstein laptop, borrowing features from the modern MacBook Pro and the 12-inch Macbook. The team discusses the new laptop's various pros and cons. The SyrupCast team also chats about the new features coming to the 12.9-inch and 11-inch iPad Pro, as well as the Mac mini. The new Mac mini came as a bit of a surprise to most, and the team thinks it's an update not everyone is excited about -- though hardcore Apple fans are likely thrilled. Finally, the discussion turns to whether or not Apple plans to do away with more ports in its various devices. Are we moving towards a fully wireless future lik

  • SyrupCast Podcast Ep. 183: Dreaming of a new MacBook Air

    26/10/2018 Duration: 35min

This week on the SyrupCast MobileSyrup features editor Igor Bonifacic and managing editor Patrick O'Rourke discuss Apple's upcoming fall hardware keynote. Patrick is heading out to Apple's Fall event in New York on October 30th. There are quite a few devices expected to be revealed at this year's keynote, including a new iPad Pro, an updated MacBook Air, the iPad Mini, the Mac Mini, the AirPower, and second-generation AirPods. Rumours indicate Apple's 2018 iPad Pro will come equipped with USB-C this time around, making Apple's iPhone the only device that still features the companies proprietary Lighting port technology. • SyrupCast Podcast Ep. 182: Welcome to kushland

    19/10/2018 Duration: 35min

This week on the SyrupCast, MobileSyrup telecom reporter Corey Herscu discuss the legalization of cannabis in Canada. If you haven't heard by now, recreational use of Cannabis is now legal in Canada as of October 17th, 2018. The team digs into the various technology and software solutions that have been popping up around the country in response to the big day. The team also talks about how to actually buy cannabis online. One of those ways, at least in the province of Ontario, is through the Ontario Cannabis Store (OCS), which was built via a partnership with Canadian e-commerce company Shopify. Over the course of October 17th, the OCS' online store hit 100 orders per minute. The SyrupCast then looks to the future of cannabis in Canada. Tune in to hear the SyrupCast team's thoughts. • SyrupCast Podcast Ep. 180: We’re not mad, we’re just disappointed in the CRTC

    05/10/2018 Duration: 38min

This week on the SyrupCast MobileSyrup features editor Igor Bonifacic, telecom reporter Sameer Chhabra and freelance tech reporter and author Peter Nowak discuss everything the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) has been doing lately. Last week, the CRTC issued a follow-up decision to the Canada Broadband Fund. Under the regulator's previous chair, Jean-Pierre Blais, the recommended broadband target was set at 50Mbps download and 10Mbps upload speed. Now the CRTC has halved that number to 25 Mbps download and 5 Mbps upload for rural and remote communities across Canada. Friend of the podcast and telecom journalist Peter Nowak has some thoughts on the matter that he tweeted out last week. Among other announcements this past week, the CRTC denied the Fairplay Canada coalition on 'jurisdictional grounds.' The team talks about how the CRTC pointed out that there is already a copyright review under way in Parliament that it states is a better fit for the discussion of whether or no

  • SyrupCast Podcast Ep. 178: 'Gather Round'

    14/09/2018 Duration: 41min

This week on the SyrupCast MobileSyrup features editor Igor Bonifacic, managing Patrick O'Rourke, telecom reporter Sameer Chhabra and freelance tech reporter Josh McConnell recap Apple's recent fall hardware event. If you listened to last week's episode, you'd know that the team predicted what they expected to see at the annual keynote. Leaks indicated that the Apple had plans to add a larger display to the Series 4 Apple Watch. It turns out that the wearable's screen gained a substantial 30 percent, resulting in a shift that the team feels is a significant improvement to the Apple Watch. The updated iPhone XS and XS Max, on the other hand, are more iterative and have the team considerably less thrilled, with the entry-level iPhone XR being the most compelling new announcement to come out of the event. The XR still includes the majority of the XS' and XS Max's most exciting features but includes a colourful body and a more affordable price tag. As was mentioned last week, it seems Apple will likely hold an ad
